Have been watching here and unless I missed it have not seen anyone mention trying a Classic (200 Optimax) with a Fury prop. Curious as to performance all around and wonder which would most likely be best – the 24 or 25″ pitch? Thanks
A 25 should do well for most. In some cases I could see where even a 26 would work. The Fury is just a better all around prop than either the Tempest or the Trophy.
Thanks…so far I like my trophy slightly better than the tempest but thinking about trying the Fury, just had not decided on pitch yet…
Bob, I have an 08 Classic w/ 200Opti and am running a 25P Fury. One person, 33 gallons fuel, ran 72.9 gps and with 2 people, full fuel run 70.9gps. In both cases I am turning 5750 rpms. The hole shot is incredible, and mid range excellent for me (55mph @ 4400rpms). I want to try a 26P as I think I may be able to turn it. Let me know if you have questions I might be able to answer.
Anyone running a Fury on a classic with a 2.5 200 efi? Currently running a 25p tempest with good top end around 72 mph but need some help with slow hole shot.
Unfortunately, with a 2.5 200 you are looking at a lack of torque on the bottom end. This means you have to nail the PVS openings to get the motor to wind up a bit to make enough horsepower to get out of the hole. The 3.0 block makes more torque down there, even though the 2.5 200 and 3.0 200 make the same total horsepower. The torque curves are simply significantly different. Once you get either motor up to the correct RPM, top speed should be the same. But the 2.5 block is simply going to have more trouble swinging the same pitch at low speeds. So you will need to comrpomise. If you want to run with the big block 200s, you have to swing the same prop, and sacrifice hole-shot. I never saw this better illustrated than in 1992 when Merc introduced the 2.5 liter 150 XR6. They also made a 2.0 liter 150 as well, but the XR6 would murder the small-block on takeoff, and on a heavier hull, it would out-run the small block on top-end as well. The small-block simply had to run less prop to be able to lift a big bass boat out of the water… while the XR6 could summon enough grunt to swing a bigger prop on the low end for hole shot, and then use the same horsepower on the top end to move right along. The old “there is no replacement for displacement” remains true…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
RE: barriqi with the 25″ Fury….What is your jackplate set at and are you running with what pvs plugs. Sounds like you are doing very well. While my tempest did well with most everything the hole shot was lacking. The trophy is better out of the hole but at higher speeds very squirrelly no matter where I have set jack plate. Really looking for a very good hole shot with reasonable top end (70 mph is fine). I do not normally carry a heavy load in my boat except my own weight – 250#………Thanks
My JP is set even (inner/outer plate even) as it came from the factory. I raised the plate but had no gain. I think the Fury likes it lower to bite. I weigh 230#s and my partners are all about 200#s. I carry 100#s (roughly) of tackle. I ran a 26P tempest plus but like you had to fight it on top (72gps). The Fury is very forgiving and up to 70 virtually no issues to drive. The last 3mph is where you have to drive the boat. I must say I am impressed with the Fury prop. Rick told me the Trophy may be a bit faster but I would have to drive it.
Also, no PVS plugs on the Fury.
Thank you very much for the information. I had been trying to decide between trying the 24 or 25 thinking the holeshot on 24 should be much better but you indicate great holeshot with the 25 so I think I will try that. (cant afford both props) My trophy 25 is very new so will sell and probably the tempest 25 too and give the Fury a try. Thanks for you help……………….
