Pantera classic prop question

I have a 99 classic with 150 mercury efi. It has a 23 pitch trophy plus 4 blade prop. The motor will only turn 5100 rpms and tops out at 55 mph. Holeshot is ok but when the livewell is full or i am fishing with another adult it is very sluggish. Any suggestions to get more rpms and better holeshot.Last edited by droberts on January 13th, 2013, 11:56 pm, edited 2 times in total.

I have a 94 PII with a 150 running a 23 p trophy plus and could only get about 5400. I going to have mine dropped done to a 22 p so I can get my rpms up. Currently I runnong a 23 p tempest and running at 5800 and 63 mph.

Im sure some experts will chime in shortly but have you experimented at all with your motor height? In some cases, raising your motor can gain you some rpms and top end – just depends on where you are at now. Yes, I have tried different motor heights. I think its in the correct place after discussing with BCB. Im thinking about removing a couple of the vent plugs to help increase rpms at holeshot. Thanks for the response.

I can get minew to run 5400 at about 60 with it being 3″ below pad. From what I understand trophys are normal off a little ou tof the box, so you could probley have it worked and get your RPMs up.

23 pitch sounds ok for that application . — Venting the prop a little more will help with the holeshot , but you never mentioned your rpm coming out of the hole . — It should be around 3500 – 3900 somewhere I would think . — Motor height affects both ends of the spectrum respectfully , but if youre holeshot is only so/so , and you arent getting any rpm up top , I would probably look at how much actual power youre getting from the powerhead . — Take a compression reading and compare to factory specs. is where Id start . — Keep us advised . — Mark

Thanks Mark,I purchased the boat about 15 months ago. At that time I tinkered with the motor height and never saw an increase on either end of the spectrum. I never thought about the holeshot rpms and will check next time I go out. The compression at the time of purchase was around 125 per cylinder. I think the venting will definately help the holeshot, I am now trying to improve the top end some. I dont want to risk hurting the engine but I would like around 5,400 rpms if possible. Im going to check the engine height and maybe experiment with that again. Thanks

I run a Yamaha on my 99 Classic , so Im not real sure about the Mercs max rpm , but I believe alot of guys will turn them up to 5600 or so . — Remember , as you raise the jackplate to gain rpm on top , youll give up a little on holeshot . — I think you might be on the right track with venting the prop a bit more though . — Good luck , and like I said earlier , keep us in the loop . — Mark
