Just would like to know how the Ranger 198 vx compares to the BassCat Pantera II in handling and top end speed with a Merc 200 ? I hope I am not making a ma stake asking this ?
Your fine asking, and we are sure someone will come on here giving you answers from experience. Our take is a further back deck position to appear as a wider bow beam, slower speed, further back deck Trolling pedal also. Fuel mileage will go to the Pantera II model by 20% or so. Next decision is on trailer and accessories. Ride is dependent on opinion. Obviously we feel a P2 is an almost perfect overall boat for most. Though the rest is up to opinion other than ours. One further input is BCB has continued to be in business for around 38 years without fail. Where as the other company is now presently in their second bankruptcy. This is one most never think about and we often fail to mention: Finally the parts replacement cost and availability. The comparable price of a replacement fender, which some day you will probably need, is about 50% less from BCB and other parts are similarly less in cost. Just price a fender or other part comparably and see for your self. Though others here probably have experienced that also. BCB
I havent ridden in a P2, but I got to borrow a 198 Ranger to fish a tournament a couple of years ago. It had a 200 Hpdi on it with a 25 m prop..topped out at 70 mph (analogue gauge) trimmed way up and was the worst chining experience of my life. It was the roughest riding boat I have ever ridden it and I got soaked to the bone under sunny, slightly choppy conditions. It was a dealer staff boat they were trying to sell me on. Told them I wouldnt take it off their hands for free. I know a couple of guys with new P2s, run mid 70s and stay bone dry…one has an E-tec, the other is a Merc. The only negative Ive heard is the front decks too short for rods on the driver side (hit the console). They both say the boats are scary fast…mid 70s, same as my Puma. The bigger Rangers ride pretty good ( not fast), but tend to get you wet pretty easily. Have another buddy who runs the Z21 with 250 Hpdi…tops out @ 68 mph with a 25p T1. Ive driven his, pretty solid in rough water. Hes looking to get out of his and into a BassCat, he noted the speed, price, and service that come with a BassCat…those are his words and I agree totallly. My Puma with a 225 is about 7 mph faster on top end than his rig, and I dont ever get wet.
Hawgwild, heres what I would do, now Im some what Biased but I will be perfectly honest about it….I used to sell Rangers, up until 3 years ago I thought they were the #1 Bass Boat….Heres what Ive seen and gotten as far as feed back….the 198/188 are very similar, guys have told me and written on bassboatcentral.com (archives will show it) about the stern of the boat being very light and squirelly, which is not a Ranger trait….now alot of that can be attributed to set up, but almost all owners that are not in denial will talk about the feeling of the boat wanting to come around…..they also talk about the 198 riding like a Rail Car, very stiff and unforgiving, but remember your plowing water, where on the Pantera 2 your on top and have much more bow control for trim…go underneath a 198 or any Ranger, look at the chines/strakes, notice how round they are,if you can take a good bright picture of the hull design and so on, look down the side of the hull with some good sunlight, you should see waves and such, print thru can also be seen, check the details on the trailer, where the Ranger trail is Killer, BCBs design is more sexy and has way more detail (even though we should incorporate some pins or a secondary color on the fenders, sorry its a nice touch)…..now when it comes to trim and detail inside, Rangers compartments are very nice, though with Glass lids look up the amount of guys that send them back for non warped ones…..Check the latches and the solid construction on the cat, remember Rangers is Full Foamed, the Cat is not, and the Cat will still feel stronger and lighter….The Pantera 2 is probably the perfect boat for the weekend warrior, its a absolute ROCKET with any of the Current 3+liter Big Block 2 strokes, and is priced to make sense…..Id call around and get some aggresive pricing if your comparing to new…..now I always tell price shoppers to really work with their local dealer vs. just buyin on the lowest price, that $500-$1000 may go a long ways in 10yrs of ownership…..I really like the Pantera 2, its very sporty looking with out the some what dated Steel grab rails, Ive been sayin all of the “rail” boats should be acrylic, but what do I know…..When it comes to resale pricing, BCB does very well and typically the market is not FLOODED like the Ranger lineup…..Id definitely drive the boats and if not experienced make sure someone that is drives also, just an idea…….Any more questions ask and we will all try and help….Now Go out and start shopping, help our economy…..BrannonYour Signature …
Thanks for the comments Looks like I maid the right choice in a new boat.
