I have a 2007 Pantera II with an Evinrude 200 that I bought used at the first of the year. The boat came with a 23 pitch Renegade prop. The Renegade turned up too many rpms, and after getting advice and opinions from alot of folks, I decided to go with a 25 tempest plus. I ordered the prop and have been adjusting the setup for a couple of weeks to try and get it where it needs to be. Right now the jackplate is 3/8″ above flush, the motor is turning up 5800 rpms, with good water pressure (30-35 psi), and topping out at about 67.5 mph. The past couple of days I have ran the boat and it takes 12-15 seconds, at 2000 rpms, before the boat picks up more rpms and planes off. Yesterday I filled the livewell and it wouldnt plane off at all. Changed a couple of plugs and it blew out. I have tried various sizes and combinations of plugs (running without full livewells), and can have one removed and two mediums without blowing out on takeoff, but I still have some cavitation after the bow lays over. I have read a few posts that say to raise engine until you get torque or pressure drops, then adjust for holeshot. I still have good pressure so should I move the jackplate up? In comparison with other similar boats, mine is slow. I need advice on where to go from here. The boat turns the prop fine once it gets out of the hole, but I feel like there is a way for a little more speed as well as a decent holeshot. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Justin
First you need to measure your motor height above the pad and that will tell us a more accurate height. I would put it at around 3.25″ above the pad and try a 26 trophy and see how you like it. We have an 08 PII and currently we are getting 69 mph on gps and it is still under the 20 hour mark on the engine. Also the props have the PVS plug system on them and you need to adjust them until you get the best hole shot with it. I dont have any experience running the 25 tempest but the 26 trophy carries a load great and gets out of the hole great as well. Another member on here (TnSabre) is running a tuned 27 tempest and he is getting around 73 with one person and a full load. From talking to him about the 25 Tempest it will probably spin too many rpms come winter time.
We set those up with a 25 Tempest on the get go. There is a good option in the 26 Raker II and they like that at BRP. We think it might need a 24 to get the Rs where you want them. Wonder what propeller Kelly has on his rig? BCB
Just noticed that you have a Evinrude 200 so I have no clue on the setup. Both me and Travis has 200 Optis.
I am running 200 opti with a 26 trophy last tourny I had a really big guy speed was 70.9 on gps at 2500ft elev.you might try 26 tropy good luck MIKE.
i had a p 2 before i got my cougar and i never could get the tempest to run on it. i finally tried a 25m yamaha prop and had pretty good results with it. boat was a little slow out of the hole but it made it for it on top end. never had a gps on it but a friend that i fished against regularly and ran my boat beside his in tournys i was just a touch faster and his gpsd at 72.7. i also tried a 24 trophy on it and it was very good out of the hole but too many rpms on top end. a 26 trophy may be the ticket though. sonny
Evinrude guys! Not a Merc or Hammer.
According to the previous owner, the boat came with a 26 Raker. He said it would not come out of the hole and took it back to the dealer who put a 23 renegade on it. Since I was unable to borrow and try a prop I spent alot of time speaking with other folks, basscat owners, pantera owners, and even contacted the factory. After all was said and done the concensus swayed me to go with the tempest. Is there anything else I can try to do to get this setup to work, or does it sound like I have exhausted all options? If so, anyone interested in a brand new tempest 25? Thanks, Justin
I forgot to ask, BCB you said I might want to try a 24 to get the rpms where I want them? I am turning 5800 – 5850, is that not where I need to be? Thanks Again, Justin
Send a message to Texabamabass. He frequents this board and bassboatcentral.com. He has the identical rig to yours…not sure what prop that Kelly runs though.
