Passenger Rod Rack Scratches

Bass Cat: About the only thing that I do not like about my boat (09 Puma FTD) is the passenger rod rack area, as there is no protection against the fiberglass to protect against scratches where the reels rub the side and the top rod eyes rub against unprotected fiberglass just behind the seats. Why do you not apply some sort of logo in vinyl or rubber to protect the fiberglass around the passenger rod ramp? I am confident there is a reason that you do not do this at the factory. I am looking for input from you as to whether I would be better off to just leave this area alone as it is, or to apply some sort of self adhesive vinyl or rubber to this area to protect against scratches. If you recommend applying some sort of protection, what do you recommend, and are there any tricks to having the product adhere well? Thank you in advance for your assistance. Corky

I agree 100% My passenger rod storage area has been thrashed by reels rubbing against it for years! Excellent observation/recommendation!

Corky, I have tried to post pics here but have not succeeded. I was going to post pics of my padded area that I have on the rod rack for the passenger, it works great. Corky, We have not found a preferable padding that the adhesive holds well on. The sand paper style tread plate holds well, though most of the rubberized matting we find the adhesive moves in sunlight. The concerns there are of course loss of the matting or corners coming up, a suitable trim on the matting for long term durability and the satisfaction, as well as costs when it would come up. We have looked at everything from jet ski materials down and just ahve not found what we think is good enough. We have left it as the gel is easier to deal with cleaning that area than the problems from the pad missing. Though we remain on the look out for a type of material that will work feasibly. BCB

Not in that area, though we have looked at a urethane bumper there with adhesive similar to that.

Just get you some clear 4-6 inch wide packing tape and run it across there. That is about the best thing I have found. Clean up is a pain and you will have to redo it periodically but it will protect that little are where the 2 reels rub. Judd Lasiter

Keelshield manufactures a clear transon shield for pleasure boats that are usea swim platform to beach jetskis. If a Jetski does not scratch it I doubt a reel or rod will either, you could probably have it printed upon with some logos and it would look sweet! guard tape work? It is sold in bulk rolls and could be removed if wanted. BCB have you ever tried it for adhesion purposes?
