The below picture is a burn mark which was left on my carpet in the cockpit of my PIV. The burn went all the way to the bottom part of the carpet. Now heres the story – Fishing with a buddy of mine on Memorial Day. Here in Sunny California the sun was bright and the air temps were about 85-90*. Great day to be on the water. He had brought a few drinks, which we stored in the ice box, and a large one gallon clear round jug of Arrowhead Water which looks like this -The water was set on the floor in the cockpit, precisely where the burn in the carpet is now. After some investigation and a successful recreation the Arrowhead Water is the cause of the burn. Clearly the sun shone down through the water which intensified the raise and burned the circles you see above. For future reference, HIDE THE WATER! Knew it was possible in only the most perfect of situations, but didnt think it was probable. WHO WOULD!? Especially since the jug is still usable, just a little indication of heat damage on the bottom. Any physicists in here who can explain the odds of this happening? Spoke to Pete today and he didnt think it likely, nor had he heard of this happening before. Now advice question, dude is a friend but had I burned his Harley, purposely or not, Id be paying for it. Should I make him pay 100% of the carpet replacement or go halves? Thanks for reading, and this is too stupid to make up so believe every word. We did smell some burning, but couldnt figure it out for the longest time.- Chaz
Without any malicious intent to “burn” your carpet, id have to chalk this one up as bad luck and move on. Now if you really feel the need, then maybe ask him to go halves with you, as it was not your fault and truly was not his intentions to damage the carpet. Personally, id offer to go halves if it was my water bottle. Now if this was a burn in the carpet from smoking or some other form of damage then id expect him to pay for all of it. Either way i can truly say thats something that i would have never expected to see, how long was that bottle sitting in one place?
I agree with JSLAW, unless you told him specifically not to do such, your pretty much chalking this one up as experience. WOW who would have thought that would happen with a plastic water bottle. BrianBrianHAWG Hunter2013 BassCat Eyra2013 Mercury 250 Pro XS Gen2 L/U
How about an insurance claim? Sounds logical to me. That is very unusual and worth a call to my insurance agent if it was me.
+1 on all three above comments. Still sucks.
Thanks for the input gents. Thats why I asked. If he was just stupid then there would be no question, but the fact this is so weird changes everything.- Chaz
We dont recall ever hearing about this occurring.
My feeling is that this burn is not caused by the sun. I would get with BCB and find out the fiber composition of the carpet and then the melting point. I imagine it is some mixture of polypropylene fibers, which a quick search has a melting point of 250+ deg F. The water in the bottle should have been boiling if the temperature of the plastic got that high (if the bottle itself didnt melt). I would suspect he set the bottle down in some kind of solvent (maybe on the garage floor) and didnt realize some of it was still on the bottom of the bottle when he put it in the boat. Edit: Another thing that makes me think it wasnt from the sun is that the burn is only where the bottle contacted the carpet (as far as I can tell from the photo). If it was from the sun I would expect the burn to be in various places the bottle did not contact the carpet (which I dont think is even possible, see above).Last edited by tab2005 on May 31st, 2012, 2:01 pm, edited 2 times in total.
The possibility does exist that the water in the bottle magnified the suns rays much like a magnifying glass can . Wierd one for sure , and would be a great one for “Mythbusters “. — As for repairs , insurance is the best way to go since the cost would be pretty high to replace it . Probably alot easier to get him to pay half of the deductible than anything else . — Just my 2 cents worth —
Well that amswers the question ive had for two years how the burn spot got on my 2003 cougar carpet! ! ! Pro-Tec Productswww.protecproducts.com
