Well, this last cool front no doubt has temporally interfered with the quality bite. There were some big girls eating yesterday, but their numbers were much lower than a few days previous to the front. Keep in mind, that strong cold fronts that occur during the Spring & Fall effect the bite more so than the Summer and Winter fronts. During the Spring & Fall they seem to be more severe.
There was plenty of surface activity taking place yesterday, but not nearly as much as there was before the frontal passage. There was a lot less quality fish involved as well. The majority of schools had plenty of Catfish, Drum and white bass with maybe more short fish in the mix.
The best baits pretty much remain the same, steel shad, red eyed shad, square bills, flukes and the topwater baits have really come into play the last couple of weeks. The cooler surface temps has made the difference in the top water bite.
The majority of surface activity is taking place in 3 to 8 foot of water, usually with some deeper water near by. In other words, bars, humps and long underwater tapering points will be your best places to key in on for schooling fish. The back of some creeks has picked up some with an increase in activity. These would be short Creeks off the main Lake. The deeper bite just has not been good for me in the past couple of weeks.
I really look for the Smallmouth bite to pick up once our surface temps get into the 60’s. They will also join in on the surface feeding, making the Fall gorge complete with most species.
You should notice that as the elevations receed and the surface temps get colder, the grass will begin to lay down and loose a lot of its effectiveness in holding bait & fish. The grass that exist a little deeper out will last longer and
continue to hold fish.
I will make this post somewhat short as there is not much change over the last few post. Hopefully next week we will see some major changes for me to report……
Fish safely and good luck…..
