I guess my question is “How low on the plate is too low?” I have an 07 PIV w/ 200 opti. Hitting around 5500 RPMs, rooster tail over cowling when totally trimmed and can only hit about 66mph gps. I am a big guy 270lbs. I have had the boat touch 70 one time by myself on fumes, but if you put another person in the boat or fill the wells the best I get is about 64mph. I have been told they like it low on the plate. I lowered motor to 1/2″ from flush and it did not seem to help. I have tried two different Trophy props and am now running a 26 Tempest. I just feel like I am running flat. Hole shot is great and I cannot get her to chine ever. Any suggestions.
The newer Fury seems to have helped some, and the engine may need to go down another 1/4″ also. Though watch clearance on the transom when tilting, and we would suggest a trim stop switch if your engine does not have one. Some do and they are not adjusted. BCB
Already adjusted the trim stops. What would happen if I went down lower than 1/4″? How would I know if I went to low?
As long as it drives fine and gains performance you should be fine. Lowering it can decrease hole shot also. BCB
Definitely lower it a 1/4 inch….lower you go the more chining kicks in. Sounds like your prop shaft is too high and your losing top end.
First, great post to exchange info on PIVs. Thanks for sharing. Theres not many of us out here so any exchange is a great read. To me it seems lowering motor is opposite to conventional thought of getting boat out of water for less drag for better WOT speeds. I have 2010 PIV and have not check below pad yet but my Slidemaster JP are 5/8″ above level, RPMS at WOT are 5700 with trim just above 3/4 full, water pressure is normal, chine walk at WOT but controllable with some steering torque. Steering torque goes away if I trim down . On my dealers computer after 15 hour service it says I have hit 5900 RPMS with a 25P Fury prop. Best GPS so far running solo this summer has been 72.3 on the GPS with VERY slight current to none going down river, going up river against the same slight current to none was clocked at 71.8 mph on the GPS with empty live-wells and tournament load and 15-20 gallons of gas. Why are you going lower on JP? What are the benefits to doing this? I came out of a 2008 Sabre and using same gun and run philosophy stated above. Thanks, FlyswatterLast edited by Flyswatter on September 11th, 2009, 1:09 pm, edited 2 times in total.
Thanks for the info. I am prefishing for a tournament today if I can ever get away from this computer. I am going to lower the JP 1/4″ before I go. I will post the results Saturday evening. Flyswatter asked why go lower on the JP? All I can tell you is that the Piv is a different animal. I came out of a 99 Cougar to this boat. I choose a Piv because of garage space, draft, and deck layout not speed, but I ran a piv with a 200 Rude on the back and it blows mine out of the water at WOT. This got me tweaking around on mine. Conventional wisdom has told me the piv loves the 200opti low on the JP. That was the reason for my post. Flyswatter it sounds like you are getting great #s the way yours sits. That is what I am trying to find without forking over the dough for a Fury. At least not yet.
Hmm… Not sure how that works for Mercs since I dont have one. What are the adverse effects raising the motor? Is it excessive chine walk? Is it water pressure issues? Someone will come along to help out. I have read Merc guys getting much better WOT numbers so there is a solution. You will get your numbers up its just fine tuning. Good luck on the tournament! I agree on the PIV choice. I have garage size issues so the PIV is a great choice for me too. Love the layout and fishability. Only change would be the cooler. Way to small for that boat in my opinion. Built in molded cup holders on the floor would be nice too. Other then that the PIV rocks!Last edited by Flyswatter on September 11th, 2009, 2:41 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I have a 08 P4 with opti 200, I have ran a 25 trophy and a 24 fury both about the same on top end maybe the trophy by a hair. I am 240 with 1/2 tank of gas (I only have under the seat tank) and full livewells and lots of tackle I have bumped 70 once. If I have a partner in the boat it drops down to 65-67. With the trophy the jackplate liked to be set 1/16 above flush on the slide master, the fury likes it about 1/4 higher. Both props have only turned right around 5600
The P4 likes the engine LOW on the transom, period, and i was running a 26p Trophy, worked for more rpms and running loaded 68-72 depending on conditions, etc,,,,
