Im fishing the BFL on the Potomac next weekend (July 11th). I”m fishing it from the backseat. Ive never been anywhere near the river, and we dont have any grass around here where I live. I”ve always wanted to try fishing up there, so I signed up for a BFL to see what its like. Its a (5) hour drive away, but I just had to satisfy a curiousity. I hear frogs are good baits up there. And I hear alot about sweet beavers with 1 oz to 1 1/4 oz weights to punch thru the grass. Can you guys suggest any other baits from the back seat?
There are other dominant patterns there that involve isolated cover (logs etc.) and off shore drops or structure around rock piles. Both of those would require a crank bait of some type. The Potomac can require most of your arsenal, depending on your draw.
Thanks BCB. I was hoping to pair down my tackle, but it sounds like Id better take more than I thought. Cranking breaks in the summer time is what I normally do around here (High Rock Lake)…..so that Id be comfortable with. Thanks BCB
Potomac River must haves are 1/2 oz to 3/4oz bullet weights and straight tail worms (pegged) for grass edges ,shad colored 3/8 spinnerbaits,Manns baby minus 1s(grey ghost and brown),Dark colored senkos, punch weights with sweet beavers(roadkill and black),Pipsqueak buzzbaits (white and white w/red buzzer), pop rs and buzzing frogs, grass jigs and flipping jigs…… Best of luck
Sounds like the arsenal!
My non-boater in the last bass weekend series on the Potomac took 4th throwing a 4″ sinko behind me. Oh, he also got the bigger frog bite later in the day too. It was just his time. We had a fun day and I was happy to see him check.
Ive fished the river a ton in the past. Everything said in the thread above will work. Also try a swim jig around the grasslines and try rockpiles away from the vegetation towards the channel if you are not getting good bites. Where to fish on the rockpiles depends on the current at the time. LOZman
When the sun is high a heavy weighted beaver is hard to beat fishing the mats near the edges, you have to pitch the bait high and let it free fall to penetrate sometimes even with an ounce and a half.
I wanted so say thank you to all of the input! I really appreciate it. I”ll post how may day goes when I get back. Again, I sincerely appreciate it.
I have fished the Potomac for the past 15 years. First of all start reading the reports at VA Outdoors web site. They are truthful and accurate. Read the thread under Potomac River fishing reports called ” Potomac river clues”. It will tell you everything you need to know about fishing tides and grass. You will have to go where the boater takes you so you will be at his mercy. Right now the color back is the ticket for frogs and senkos. Green pumpkin and red shad are good backup colors. Right now and depending where you will be, you will need between 1/2 oz and 1 oz sinkers for flipping. Make sure you use at least a #6 hook for your frogs and at least one heavy action rod with 30# braid or stronger for frog fishing. I use a owner 1/16th oz swim bait hook with 17# Flora for flipping Senkos into the holes in the grass. The river is healthy from DC to Aquia creek on the Potomac so it is possiable to catch quality fish almost anywhere. There is a ST Judes tournament on Fri the 10th so if you have access to a computer check the reports on VA Outdoors web site Fri night. Good luck! Jim
