2006 puma with Merc 250 xs.Last 2 trips to the lake when I take the boat out, I trim engine all the way down to drain water then I trim it up to put on transom saver. When I stop the up trim and start to go back down, all 4 of the different trim switches stop working. About five minutes later after I wipe the boat down they start working again. Im wondering if there is a relay or fuse that may be over heating. I dont think anything is wrong with the trim itself. Any advice on where to start. Thanks
My Yammie started doing that some. There is a relay under the cowling…mine was where the fuse panel is…I sprayed some contact cleaner on all the connections, and on the relay and everything started working fine again.2017 Sabre FTD AE DC2017 Yamaha 175 SHOMK Fortrex 80Helix 10 Mega SI in consoleHelix 7 GPS SI GN2 on bow
I find it odd that its only doing it while the engine is OUT the water??If its a relay, here is some helpful info: http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=23996, http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=696938Possible be the UP trim limiter sticking. Info: http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=703541If the relays do not fix the issue, it may be the motor overheating quickly when out the water. I would touch test it after I move it up and down out the water.Keep this thread updated. It will help others who run into this issue.
You have three relays on a panel inside the motor cowling – one is up trim, one down trim, one is master power. All three relays are the same part number. If one is starting to go intermittent (read temp sensitive) – its time to replace all three. Theyre relatively inexpensive and replacing all at the same time is cheap insurance against an issue on the water later. Itll run you about $60 in parts and if you want to pay labor – you should be in and out for about $150-$200. Doesnt sound switch related as they all either work or they dont as you describe. As a check, when you hit the switch and its not doing anything – are you hearing a “click” in the motor housing. No click is a failing or failed solenoid. I did mine myself and it was a fairly straight forward repair. Its plug and play. Took a little over an hour.
Thanks guys.It may be one of the relays but there is no clicking noise that I heard. Where would the solenoid be located.
Look it up by serial number on the Merc website. It will give you a full exploded view of the assembly. All three solenoids so are on the same plate.
If the Relays are plug and play, (next time this happens) remove the cowl, swap the up /down relays and see if the down trim works and the up doesnt. Than you will know its a relay specific issue.

I replaced both the relays yesterday thinking that was my issue. Still wont work. They will click when the trim switch is used but will not trim in either direction. Is it possible there may be a power issue or something else I could check. Thanks
If new relays are clicking and trim is not working at all what would be some other possible checks.
check all power connections and grounds
