I have a 2009 pro pakIII charger and I just noticed that the cranking battery light is going from red to green very quickly. What error does this indicate? Thanks!FISH ON!
TROUBLESHOOTINGProblem: LED’s for an output are blinking back and forth?Clue: When the LED’s blink, it means the smart chip for that bank is not seeing the battery for some reason.Where to look:1. Check the connections to the battery to make sure they are good. If the connections are loose or hookedup backwards it could cause this failure.2. Check the fuse on that output to see if it is good. Please note that the fuse is located in a fuse-holder at theend of the cable inside shrink wrap.3. Check the battery voltage. If the battery voltage is below 4 volts, it could cause the LED’s to blink. The battery voltage level must be above 2volts, the fuse at the end of the cable must be good and the connection must not be wired in reverse. If any ofthese problems exist, the charger will blink the “Red” and “Green” LED’s back and forth for that problemoutput.Ill check this out in the morning.http://www.geniuschargers.com/FISH ON!
IF YOU ARE RUNNING AN OPTIMAX, IT IS DRAWING THE CRANK BATTERY DOWN TO THE POINT THE CHARGER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE. PUT BATTERY ON ALTERNATE CHARGER TO GET IT FULLY CHARGED, THEN THE LIGHTS SHOULD GO TO GREEN– BEEN THERE DONE THAT. SORRY FOR THE CAPS, DIDNT WANT TO RETYPE. SAMPS- IVE ADDED A SWITCH TO DISCONNECT MOTOR FROM BATTERYS WHEN IN STORAGE- SOLVED MY PROBLEM.BAYOU BANDIT
Sam you taking after TIDEMAN with the caps? I knew he was your idol!
Late last year I charged it all the way up, disconnected the charger and made sure the main power switch was off. The next time I went out (several weeks later) it was dead.So this last time, I left the charger plugged in (about 6 to 8 weeks). Yesterday when I tried to tilt the opti up it didnt even click. Thats when I noticed that red to green flashing lights. So I dont know how the battery could be down that low while plugged in to the charger, unless its dry. I dont like to keep the batteries on the charger for extended periods of time. Ive seen it dry out and cook batteries before. I think BCB added a post and said they didnt recommend leaving the batteries on the charger for extended periods. I might have fried that battery.Sam, do you know why the opti draws current while its taking a winter nap?I have a quartz clock in the dash that might be drawing current. Ive turned off the master power switch but I think its directly wired, so that would definitely draw on the battery. Not sure how much of a draw it would be – shouldnt be much.I will certainly take your advice and hopefully thats the issue. Ive got a really nice automotive charger that I can try. Thats after I make sure there is water in the cells. Thanks Sam!Last edited by WTFletch on March 6th, 2010, 12:16 pm, edited 1 time in total.FISH ON!
All engines and the boat have parasitic voltage, and especially if you have a stereo. All the computer items on the engine and boat eat a tid bit of power. Just like your vehicle would if you did not drive it regularly. You need to pop the battery with a manual charger to get it some voltage, then try the on board charger. The on board chargers are in your boat 24/7 and the reason they do not charge on a flat DEAD battery is the safety integrated into the charger for use on the boat all the time and potential issues as we understand it. I pulled the cranking battery out, checked the water (it was fine – about 1/4 under sleeve openings), put it on the external charger.I charged it 12 v 12 amp ,deep cycle setting and let it run for about 45 minutes. It wasnt coming up so I flipped it over to 75amps and let it run for about 5 minutes. Then I switched back to 12/12, and it showed full charge. So I hooked up a 12 volt light to the battery and it ran the light down within 2 minutes. Then I hooked it back up on 12/12 and Im going to let it run all day.I had to pull one of the troller batteries out and use it as the cranking battery. I have to take the boat in for optimax service and I had to get the opti tilted up (dont want to mess with the manual raise deal). If this battery turns out to be bad, I was wanting to replace it with an Optima 27m. However the manufacturer said -Q5: “Can I charge a lead-acid battery and a gel-cell battery together?A5: Genius Battery Chargers can charge Wet, Gel, MF and AGM batteries. However, it is good practice not to mix battery chemistries in your battery system.” Now I need to decide between the Optima D27M, D31M and D34M and if I want to drop that much dough right now.FISH ON!
The charger is going to handle the mix of Gel and AGM, or Wet cells. Though there is a potential that they could confuse the charger. It sounds like a bad charger though Fletch, swap the leads around from another battery and see if you get the same results on that bank. This is a very simple diagnostic trial. BCB
Bummer – but thanks BCB Ill switch the leads and see what happens when I get the boat back from the shop.I read another post ( I think BCB posted this) showing how to test the input voltage.”to check input voltage, disconnect the positive lead and put your Voltmeter on AMPs, then connect it in between the charger lead and the positive post. Plug in the charger and the ampmeter on the Voltmeter will show you input amperage.”This sounds like a good test for checking the charger.Which leads to another question. I bought this boat used from a guy in Arkansas in October. I think the boat was delivered to the original owner on April 5th. Will this charger be under warranty? Thanks!FISH ON!
I received an email reply from Noco.Sorry you are having the trouble. The flashing means the charger is not seeing the battery. This could be caused by: Fuse blown at end of cable. Fuse is under black shrink wrap.Battery is real low. Check with voltmeter, if it is lower than 3V it could be the cause.Loose connection from charger to battery.Check these and let me know if I can help you any further. Thanks,Rick SIll probably run down to the boat shop and see if I can check these things also.ThanksFISH ON!
