Well me and my son won the little 10 boat tourney yesterday, that we been fishing weekly, but my boat is toast for a while. Started out the day with a little flapping noise when lower unit was engaged. Put it in neutral and noise would go away. So I figured it was a lower unit issue. Wasnt too big a deal, until coming back in… And it had progressed to a huge vibration that it sounded like it could fly apart at any moment. I tried to take it easy and limp it back in, but by the time I got back to the landing… Water pressure had weakened dramatically and it still had a somewhat vibration in neutral at this point. I did keep a close eye on engine temperature and I kept it safe temps coming back, but theres serious issues now, and a lower unit is without a doubt hurt badly. What do you guys think, and would yall rebuild, or buy a remanufactured unit, and if so, who from? Its a 93 P2 with a 200 efi XRI.
I wouldnt be afraid of a rebuild. It might not be as bad as you think. A good rebuild person is worth their weight. Remember though dont match old gears with new. It just dont work. Might be just clutch dogs..until you get into it you want really know. I read of some aftermarket units that are priced right. But of not good quality materials.if you choose a whole unit just be cautious.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Thanks Red… Im hoping for the best
Ive got a lower that would work for you its not pretty and it will need a seal kit but its good besides that. $100 you pay shipping let me know if you want it? Kip(402) 639-8362 call or text
Thanks 94, Ill keep that in mind. Im gonna first make sure I dont have engine problems too. I just had my lower unit rebuilt last fall, so Im ready to get something in there that will hold up for a while. Looking at all my options right now.
Drain the lower unit and check for metal and/or water. Thats where to start.
Ive heard tell of reman. units that were cheap with so called cheap parts, but were warrantied for 3 years. Has anybody heard of, or tried any?
I heard of it going both ways. I dnt think the gears are harden as much. I kno sounds kinda crazy! But its true. Guess its like some of the auto parts distrubuters. Hit or miss! IMO I would use factory components and not aftermarket. Warranty sure. But wat about the down time inbetween. Aftermarket is ok on someparts. But gear and bearing IMO is not one to gamble with. Quality of hardness goes along way.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury

When my lower unit went out, it was tempting to spend less money. Some have had success with them but I have heard more stories of these “brand new” lower units going out and having to replace them multiple times. My local Mercury dealer told me that he had considered becoming a dealer for their parts, but he used one on a Yamaha and it went out 3 times. Yes, they replaced it each time but that is more downtime for the customer. He said that it made him look bad and he could not afford to lose customers over poor quality parts. Ward has mentioned many times that the SEI lowers are Chinese junk, and that seems to be the general opinion. To some its worth the risk for the savings. But its kind of a crap shoot whether you get a good one that will last or one of the bad ones.
