Lets get the specs out of the way. 04 Sabre single console 04 Merc XR-6 with about 80 hours No jack plate 23 pitch Tempest WOT in cool weather with a tournament load, full gas tank, only me in the boat (200 lbs) and no water in the livewell I am hitting the rev limiter and getting 65.2 on the GPS. I have a 23 pitch Trophy I am going to run soon but have no idea how well it will run. Would like to see if I can stay WOT without hitting the limiter. My hole shot is nothing less than phenominal also. Now for my plan. I want to put a 6 inch jack plate on (Soon!!!!) and try to go up to a 25 pitch Tempest with the 23 pitch Trophy as a back up or warm weather prop. Am I dreaming or with the 150 XR-6 turn these props without to much sacrifice of my hole shot. Also with my top end increase? Thanks for any advise you guys can hand out. You should not get hurt at all on your holeshot. The only prop I ever put on my Sabre xr6 that hurt my holeshot was a largehubbed 26 Trophy that was not it that great of shape. The 25 Tempest and 25 Trophy both came out great even in the summer under a pretty good load for me. As far as your top end, it all depends on how many rpms you can spin that 25. As strong as your motor sounds I think you will gain some speed w/ the 25. I would guess even without the plate on you might be looking around 67. Never know til you run it and see. Keep me posted on your results. I do miss running my Sabre.
Elwood, although my boat is now put away for the winter, I was playing with a 25 tempest plus with medium vent hole plugs. Holeshot was the same as the 23 tempest. So Id say go for it, and just as TnSabre said, you wont know how each prop runs on your rig until you try. Chuck
Your boat is running great, and for the $$$$ i dont think i would change a thing ! The Sabre has always run well without a plate, D.
When I bought my Sabre it did not have a plate on it and it was going to be a while before they could get to it to install it. I told them not to be in any big hurry about it anyway. After I broke it in I ran it for a while without a plate and then they put the 6″ plate on. I never could tell any difference in the performance. I would try it without the plate for a while and just swap some props around on it. Im affraid you may be disappointed unless you are getting a good deal on this plate your looking to put on. Just my thoughts on this. The jackplate on my Sabre was something I told them I wanted on the boat before I even bought it and they agreed to do it when they could get to it. Thats the only reason mine ended up with one on it. I thought it needed one, but it really did not after it was all said and done.
I hear what you guys are saying but I was putting a jack plate on for other reasons than just the extra speed. When the motor is trimmed up the steering bar does not have enough room to fully extend and has gouged the fiberglass in the splash well. The extra speed would be nice but I like to not have to worry about dinging the fiber glass up also. I am more than happy with the performance of my Cat and love the way it handles but like any competative man, Ill pay to look good and be a couple of mph faster than the next guy. Ill try the 23 Trophy soon to see if it will keep me out of the limiter during the cool months. Thank again ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
You should be able to turn the Trophy without hitting the rev limiter, usually will drop rpms by 100-150. Great bow lift, holeshot should not decrease any. I ran one on my 89 Sabre, but it was a standard item for the boat then…….Good luck!96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
elwood, You can probably have a trim limit switch installed to prevent any further damage by overtrimming, just ask your dealer for more info.. D.
I am running a 25 on my 03 and have a best run with two aboard and empty wells of 67. most runs ae 65 ish with two and empty wells and a little lower with the box full. I am going to drop back down to a 24 to get my revs back up a bit I am at 5500 with the 25.Treat everyday like it might be the last
Elwood, I would be really happy with 65 gps. My dc 2005 has gone a best of 64.0. I have 2 props, both 23p Tempest pluss, worked by two different guys. Sure has holeshot and accel dont it 2005 Sabre, 150 XR6, Minn Kota Fortrex with Lowrance electronics
