Prop problem or other problem?

The prop on my boat had blades bent when log or stump was hit. Took prop in for repair….reinstalled prop and still have some type of problem. Just before planing off it feels like and sounds like the prop is slipping. Took prop back to shop and the prop was adjusted (blades) for more cupping. This has not resolved the problem as stated above. QUESTION: Could this problem be related to another part of the prop other than the blades or to something in the lower unit ? The prop is a Mercury Trophy Plus 26P (4 blade); motor is Mercury 225 Optimax Pro XS (2006); boat is 2007 Puma. Would very much appreciate any info on this problem. Thanks, J. Darby

J. Darby This is typical of worked propellers. It sounds like they added some pitch to the prop and thinned it, thus changing everything, which is common. They cut the blades and cupping does not solve pitch issues or ventilation. If the prop runs good on top, change the PVS plugs and start restricting the exhaust with smaller vent holes. We actually prefer just a tad bit of ventilation if you hold the throttle down. It helps acceleration. Though it should only vent for a second or so.

Its probably just a less than adequate repair job. Since its an Optimax Pro XS you wont have a hub slipping. Keep taking the prop back until they get it right. When you get tired of doing that, get another prop and try.

Are you putting the black plastic exaust vent ring back on the prop before you install it? Does it have the little black plugs installed in the holes on the prop?

Thank you BCB for this information. I am not fully familiar with the plugs. Are they adjustable or do you replace with plugs that have a smaller vent hole ? I have read about the plugs in prior articles on this board and will try to locate those articles again. Will probably end up with a new prop and keep the old one for a spare.

Many thanks to all who replied to my post–BCB, Phil Addison, and GCHagler. I have put a lot of thought on what course of action to take on the prop and have decided to buy a new prop and use the old one as a spare.

Thats what this board is for there J Darby! To help you out along the learning curve. We do think you probably can recover the ventilation you need with smaller PVS holes or plugs, though the top end is what we would want to know before we decided on anything. If this thing runs strong on top, then leave it and plug the holes. BCB
