prop suggestion needed

I have a 1993 pantera II running a 93 mercury xri 150. Currently have a 4 blade Mercury Tempest running 5400 RPM at 56 or 57 full load. I know the boat is a bit underpowered, but I am most concerned with the hole shot, not necessarily the top end. With a full tournament load, the hole shot is probably 6 seconds or so. Is there another prop someone would recommend that could help me out? Scott

Im not a Mercury guy , but I did have a Pan2 with a 150 on it for a lot of years . — Youre dealing with more than just prop / pitch this time of year . — The warmer temperatures and high humidity make your 150 run like a 125 due to air density / temp. , but thats usually more information than most people want to hear . — You didnt mention what pitch the prop youre running is , which would be very helpful information to give a starting point for suggestions . — By the RPMs posted , Im assuming a 24 or possibly 25 pitch . — The 4 blade , in my opinion , is a better prop in cooler water . — Id recommend a 3 blade in a 23 pitch for summertime use . — Hope this helps . — Hoss

I ran a 96 PII with a Mariner 150 for a number of years. The best thing I ever did with that combo was to drop the Trophy in favor of a Tempest. For me, the three blade in a 23p was the ticket to a great holeshot and overall top performance.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The current prop I have is a 24P. Would you still suggest the 3 blade 23p?

Absolutely !! — As I said above , the 4 blade works better ( at least for me it does ) in cooler water temps . — The 23 should get your R.P.M. s up by 3 to 4 hundred and help the holeshot greatly . — Hoss

Tempest is a 3 blade prop, perhaps you have a trophy? thats a very popular 4 blade prop for bass boat applications. Drop a pitch in either 3 blade tempest or 4 blade trophy that will get her on plane quicker. I run a 93 175 XRI anything over 75 degrees I drop a pitch not worth lugging the engine out of the hole. Spring and fall I run a 24 Fury or a 24 Tempest summertime I run a 23 Predator

I have a 1994 Pantera II with a 1994 Mariner 150 EFI and I am running a 23 pitch Tempest currently. I can get 62-63 fully loaded in the summer at 5700-5800 rpms. It comes out of the hole well and lifts pretty good. I ran a 24 pitch Predator on my 1990 Pantera II with a Mariner Mag 2. It would run a little harder but the Mariner Mag 2 and Mag 3, and the Mercury XR4 and XR6 models are ported differently than the EFI models and they had more low end. Another prop that was used quite a bit in the early 90s was a Yamaha Pro Series. I have a 23 pitch Pro Series as my backup prop and it will turn a little harder than the Tempest due to shorter blades but I like the hub system in a Tempest better so I run that. I would definitely go down to a 23 pitch Tempest or if you can find an old Predator or Pro Series they might work as well. Good luck,Mike
