My son recently purchased a 2014 Puma with 250 SHO. Boat runs at about 78-80 with him alone and loaded with passenger about 74-75.(all GPS speeds) The speed is satisfactory, but engine is only turning 5650-5700 RPM. We were told by Yamaha techs it should turn 5950-6000. The problem is when live wells are full, it takes accelerating and then letting off 2 or 3 times before it will come up on pad.(Hole shot is awful) He fishes big water a lot(Lake Erie and other great lakes). The engine is equipped with a 27 X 15.125 Yamaha ventless prop. This obviously has been less than satisfactory performance and will not work at all when running 3-6 foot rollers on these big waters. You prop guys out there got any suggestion? Would love to hear from you with any help you might have!
I cant believe that there have been 34 looks since I posted and no one has any info at all. He previously ran a T boat with 250 Pro XS and it always got on pad easily.(it definitely wasnt as fast as this boat) He absolutely loves the boat and would never go back to the T boat again. I know the PUMA is rear heavy when live wells and fuel are full, but there must be someone out there who can give him a little help!
I ran a Fury on a 250 SHO, I would try a 25 or 26 and plug the PVS holes.Last edited by mike dominick on May 21st, 2016, 3:27 am, edited 1 time in total.
I ran a 26 fury on a 2011 puma. Great holeshot, 76-80 depending on load. Dont plug the vents. I am running a v20 now with sho. 25 fury no vents and it planes in 3 seconds. When you throttle the sho for holeshot it has to rev to about 3500 rpm to get into the torque curve. I think the vents are key.
