I am curious if anyone out there is running a 3 blade on a Pantera 4, Mercury Optimax? If so, can you describe the performance – hole shot, top end, lift, etc……? Thanks Steve
I have an 04 p4 with a blue 200. Have run 26 raker and 26 tempest. Tempest was faster for me(1-2). Raker required significantly higher jackplate than trophy(neither prop balanced or printed so who knows why really).Tempest about 1/16 above flush on inner and outer plate. Raker at least 2″ above flush for max performance without dropping water pressure. This time of year hole shot is GREAT- regardless of load. 3-4 seconds I would assume. Lift is a different bird with a 3 blade on this boat. You have to hammer the trim up on hole shot(starting from full down) and stay on it until you feel the mid portion of the boat jump up out of the water and then bump the trim down once/twice- the boat will feel like its locking into a sweet spot. Takes at least 2 miles for full speed. Performance- WIDE VARIATION! based on load. 172lbs of me and not much gas(1/4) and no wells- well it did 73.6 in about 3 miles during an “ego test” with my tournament partner who also has a p4 in May. LOAD it up- full gas, 2 guys, tackle, wells- this time of year 69-70 maybe 71 depending on run length and driver. Lift of the boat is TOTALLY rearranged versus a 4 blade. MUCH better mid boat lift with less engine effort in 4 blade. I still prefer the 3 however because I dont want my tournament partner to outrun me on practice days.C.O.D. Jr. III
Any number of props can be ran on a P4 anywhere from a 25 and 26 Tempest to a 25 and 26 Trophy. All are going to have about the same top end speed. Best suggestion is to find something that you like and not worry about what some others are running.
