On our boats, with these transducers for the electronics getting bigger and bigger. What would be the pros and cons of having a molded holder for these units on the back of the boats instead of having the bolted on brackets? I know we have the thru the hull units, but the rear units seem to have an advantage to me. After age these units seems to work loose easier and easier. Wondering if a “supposed” snap in molded transducer holder into the boat would be of benefit or maybe bother performance of the boat?
Are you talking about just a mounting point? Or something for the ducer to actually sit inside of? B/c if thats the case you might as well use the thru-the-hull type. The benefit of the other is that fact that its in the water unobstructed & is what gets you the better signal & clearer readings.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
Whats getting loose on yours?Man we bang into stuff too often for me to want something rigid on- Id rather easily replace.C.O.D. Jr. III
If youre wanting a rigid mount – go for the transducers shield & saver bolted to the jackplate. I doubt youd have any issues with hardware loosening. As far as a molded in piece – Id think the issue there would be size, shape, and obsolescence. The footprint of the HB & Lowrance units are different and prone to change with every new innovation between the two companies. The thru-hull would be the best option here as the thru stem is consistent regardless of the actual transducer shape and size. Just make sure its well sealed.
Polaris….kind of both. A rigid molded unit that the unit actually snaps down into, but still gives the unobstructed view. More like a saddle that is molded fiberglass that the transducer snaps down into, but allows a portion of the transducer to still have the main part of the transducer to be in the water without any fiberglass over it. This makes for easy changeout if unit goes bad, but also gives the benefit of the bolted on units of ease to get to and signal use. Just a thought. One of those thoughts that comes to me between 2:15 and 5:00 in the morning.
I will say in the last three boats Ive owned within 18 months both Humminbird and Lowrance Bilge mounted transducers have gone out. Getting ready to replace my transducer for my 2012 Sabre/Lowrance HDS. I wonder if there would be less issues if mounted to the transom? I understnad the cavitation issues getting on plane. Im sure getting tired of transducers going out.
Fly, you had thru the hull transducers that went out?Dan

Im not angry but I am annoyed if that makes sense. One alternative I do is idle around with my TM transducer deployed. I use my N2k network to display my TM transducer on my consoles HDS8 screen. Mostly, I dont do this but if Im in an area I wantt to use my 2D transducer I do have this option. Just havent got to my dealer yet to get a replacement transducer put in. What I like to know are transducers not being built like they use to? I dont think the issue is related to through hull but Im not going to discount it either with my current track record. Heck, I may put it in myself. What do I have to do to get it out? Last edited by Flyswatter on October 25th, 2013, 11:08 pm, edited 2 times in total.
Fly, This is one of the main reasons for my thought process. I have the bolt on bracket on the transom with HBs. But it is getting to where the tension bolts are not enough to keep it from tilting up getting on pad. And it seems the tru-hulls sound as if they fail more.
I put mine on the transom after my thru hull went out. Best move ever! Easy to replace if needed!
