I have searched a bit on the site, but have not found an answer about my boat and prop question.I have a 2005 Puma, 225 Optimx Pro XS. I am running a 26P three blade merc Tempest prop. I just tease the limiter which is good. I want a spare and was thinking of getting a 4 blade Trophy. Wisdom writers say drop one pitch size which means a 25P. Anybody running a 4 blade/puma/225 Optimax Pro??If so, good or bad or other choice. Milton
I have an 04 Cougar with a 225 Optimax (not a ProXS). When I bought it there was a 25 Trophy Plus on it. It was a fairly good summer prop. Cooler temps had me in the limiter so I got a 26 Trophy Plus. It served me well but I had a heck of a time getting the boat all the way up on the trailer. I started running it year-round and it was good but the holeshot was slower in the summer. I now run a 25 Fury all the time with no complaints.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
Thanks,My first boat was the cougar with the 225 Non Pro. It came with a 27p and I could not get out of the hole unless it was just me and light on gas. Could not get it on the trailer either. I put a Power tech 25p on it, and it hit the limiter all the time. Thanks for the info. It helps.
Does your Puma have the gas under the seat? That will make some difference between the way our rigs run but overall the 25 Fury was what BassCat and others with more knowledge recommended that I run. The Trophy, with its 4 blades, does make a better rough water prop, but like I said, I had so much trouble loading the boat that I kind of got sick of it. If someone else was with me to back the trailer down farther it would have been easier but I fish alone a lot of the time.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
Yup, Fuel under the seat. I fish alone a lot also.Bad way to end the day sin a struggle with wet feet.If its more than a chop on the water, I dont bother unless it is a tournament. Milton
My 06 Puma with 225 Pro XS came with a 26 Trophy Plus which was fine running light. I have tried several props in the past 26 Trophy Plus , 26 & 27 Tempest Plus and finally settled on a 25 Fury. For a 4 blade I would try 25 Trophy Plus based on my experience with a 26 Trophy Plus you will be into the limiter running light but fine with a load. I was able to spin the 26 Trophy to 5850 RPM light. If I was in your position knowing what I know now, I would run a 25 Fury as my primary prop and keep the 26 Trophy for a spare. The Fury will carry a load like a 4 blade prop but will provide the top end performance.
I would go with a 25 Fury, your boat loading woes will be at an end.
Sounds like the 25 Fury is the preferred all around. I will still have the 26 three blade as a spare or alternate. Thanks. Milton
Well, got to run the fury on my Puma.Water temp was 57 degrees and real dirty, air temp at 68 and . near full fuel and all my gear. I got to 72 GPS and still had maybe 100 RPM left. Got a little chin walk, but not enough to worry about. trim was at about 4.Happy with the speed, but it seemed a little sluggish out of the hole. I have the vent plugs that came with the prop in. will removing them make the hole shot better?Milton
Take the vent plugs out. Add or subtract as needed. I run mine w/o plugs. Hole shot is great. Top end is outstanding. 02 cougar/250 Yamaha. 25 Fury.
