I want to add some rod holders to the inside of my storage boxes. Is it safe to do this with self tapping screws? If I use short screws I wont get into the other boxes or out the side of the hull will I?

I dont think you will be able to put a screw in the side of the boat or through the other side without it going all the way through. Go to facebook and look at some of the current boats in production and youll be able to tell how thick or thin the fiberglass is where youre wanting to place a screw. Below is an example of the thickness of fiberglass around the storage compartment areas. Dont know which boat you have, but all are basically the same.

I made my own using a large plastic cutting board and a bunch of golf bag tubes. the cutting board was made of hmmw about 1/2″ thick. I made a cardboard template of the cross section of my rod locker where I wanted it to be and drilled tight holes for the tubes. It hold now about 12 rods but there is room for about 6 more. The board is press fit in (the locker gets smaller as it goes forward) the carpet has held it all in place now for 3 years with no problems and no screws. My boat is a 2000 Cougar

My suggestion is to get some rod sleeves/covers and forget about the tubes. I built the rod holder using tubes for my 95 PII and they worked ok but was only able to get 12 tubes in there. I removed the rod holder and started using rod sleeves and I can get 15 baitcasters and 2 spinning rods in my box now and have no problem pulling rods.
