question about voltage regulator

I have 2003 150hp xr6. while checking the motor for loose fitting ect after a rough day on the water I noticed that one of the two voltage regulators had the appearance of getting really hot. the best way I can describe it is it looked like one of those little black pellets you light on the fourth and it grows into a black worm looking thing.the wires showed a little sign of heat as well as slight discoloration.After removing the little black worm there is a distinct hole in the solid part of the regulator. I did not notice any ill effects on the motor the following day. does this sound like a candidate for replacement? $170 Is there something else I need to be looking for? what could of caused the meltdown? should I replace both or just the one? my local merc guy didnt have the part in stock so I am waiting for some help before I run the big motor anymore as I do not wish to do any permanent damage any help or opinions would be most welcomeTreat everyday like it might be the last

The XR6 regulators have been dependablefor the overall aspect, since a glitch in the early 90s. We would wait on failure since your voltage will indicates that and the engine runs after they fail.

If you have a voltmeter, hook it to the battery and notice the voltage. Then crank the motor and check the voltage. Normal voltage is around 12.5 or so with motor off, and upwards of 13 with it running, increasing with RPM. That is not a sure-fire test, as it is possible that they fail and let the thing produce proper charging voltage, but not much amperage to speak of.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

cant belive your merc tech didnt offer more information. That hole in one of the reg, is a sure sign of a dead short. Your wiring is showing you that , also a merc charging system will work on one reg, but wont give the proper amps. Not trying to scare you but change both and get it over with.

EK could be right if your not showing 13.6 up to 14.2 volts. If you are then it will eventually fail, though you can run it in the mean time. Just watch your voltage. Charge your batteries and dont let it effect your leisure time.

made it thru the weekend just fine, took the kids “perch Jerkin” and the on to swim for a bit, I believe I found the short and have it repaired now just looking for the best place to pick up a new regulator. thanks for the help!Treat everyday like it might be the last

Glad it worked to have fun with the younguns! There may not be a short causing it, though 10% chance it is. They can just fail and require replacement. You didnt notice your voltage running for education of others here did you?
