I want to figure out how to take a Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 97 and figure out how to make it float instead of suspend. I am trying to figure out if I can drill a small hole in the belly and either add foam of some kind or if just trying to remove the BBs or bearing inside to make it float. I hate to experiment on a $17 bait without having a good plan.

Also, if any of you have any broker or cracked slender pointers you are willing to part with, I would love to take them off your hands to cut open to see how they are made. Thanks.

Will it float without hooks? If so that will give you an idea how much lighter or how much floatation you need. If you have got to add floatation by using expanding foam, I would do so from the head of the bait with the bait hanging tail down. I would prefer the nose up as it sits in the water, plus the bbs in the tail area will give the best casting. Ive wondered if regular hardware show foam woild work, a regular bait does not fill with water it should be full of air. Going to smaller hooks might be all that is needed.

Its funny I have seen a couple of threads about trying to make something float higher by adding foam. One was a tail heavy bassboat and now a bait. Foam doesnt have anymore buoyancy than chambered air in my lay opinion. The only way to get a suspender to float higher is to lighten it or have a bigger flotation chamber. bob

Ive thought about trimming the lip on a jerkbait before so it doesnt dive so deep. This will take some action away but if I could get one to go no deeper than 6″ and suspend there I think it would killer during those times when the bass are shallow against banks….like they were today.

Foam is weight. No it does not make anything float, though seals air bubble cavities in to prevent it from sinking. Remove the hooks and see what you have.

I finally got some time the other night to play around in my daughters fish tank. I played with some slender 97s, 112s, and a pointer 100. I found that I had some Slender 112s that were a little buoyant to begin with. After switching the back to hooks to lighter smaller hooks it floats up pretty fast, which is what I was looking for. Now to get out on the lake to test it out. From my testing in the fish tank I can see it will be important to snap the first twitch to make sure the bearings shoot back up to the belly.

Dont add foam. You can, based on the size of the lure, drill out to increase the air volume and then fill the opening only but I would only do that as a last resort. I cant tell for certain, but it doesnt look like LC left any material in the body that could come out. If you had one of the Pointers that has 3 hooks you could just leave it off.I change the hooks and split rings – they add a surprising amount of weight by %. I think the LC comes with #6 trebles. You could change out to #8s and probably get it to rise. Water temp and line weight will make a big difference. Ward is right, the heavier mono will float it some. Another think you might try is a lightwire treble – that maybe what the LC hook is classified as already. I do know the #8 is the smallest size Ive seen. John
