I went to fish a new lake today. On the way, I came into about a 10 mile stretch of an Alabama highway that they had just put on what I call “chip and seal.” Small rocks rolled into a layer of tar or some such petroleum product. There was no place to turn around, so I had to drive on that for the whole 10 miles. I now have many chips and dings in the gel coat on my trailer fenders, especially the lower leading edge. The red gel coat is chipped off exposing the silver metal flake under it. Is there a color I can get to touch up the dings? I know it wont be smooth, like the gel, but it sure would look a lot better. A rock even broke one of my led side marker lights. All that and I had slowed to about 30 mph, much to the dismay of the several vehicles behind me.
Bill, I woulda taken to a ditch to turn around !!! Call service up on the hill and they should be able to help you find some resin/hardener and instructions on how to help cover the spots. Good luck, D.870-481-5135
Bill,Im not much help on the gelcoat repair but… I read a short while ago on the TX Fishing Forum that the same damage occurred to a bunch of guys boats. A company had just laid this garbage on the road and it was not done properly. Apparently before allowing vehicle traffic it has too be pressed in properly then swept and so forth to prevent damage from the rock. I forget the lake but it has alot of traffic to it and if i remember right about 30 boats had alot of damage to the trailers and fenders. Most had not thought to look under the hull from the truck tires and when they did they were sick from what they saw. Long story short they contacted the paving company and the companies insurance was taking care of all the damage. Just a thought and hope it helps.Larry
I do have a few dings on the bottom of the boat, but not bad. The cross members on the trailer are really pitted bad. Im going to call the Highway Department of the State of Alabama tomorrow. It happened on Alabama highway 10 on my way to Millers Ferry. Ill give service a call tomorrow morning, maybe they can get me what I need to touch up the fenders and the trailer cross members.
hey Billius something that might help to prevent those chips in the future is a product from 3m. It is a clear bra that is used on high end cars for the same reason to prevent rock chips. Here in idaho some of the window tinting companies install the stuff you might check in to it after you repair your fenders, then you wont have to worry about rock chips at all, oh and you can do the underside of the boat too hope this helps

My Sierra has some kind of clear heavy coating on the front of the rear fenders where they flair out. It may be a similar type of thing like youre talking about.
Billius; What ever you do do not accept “I am Sorry but theres nothing I can do”. If you call the Highway Department they will probably refer you to the Contractor that did the work. The Contractor depending on who they are may or may not want to be willing to work with you. If the Contractor says no then you need to call the Highway Department back and ask to speak to the Safety Officer at the Safety Office and file a complaint against the Contractor. The Department should contact the Contractor and talk to them about the complaint. Most of the time that should make the Contractor handle your issue (not too many people will even bother). If the work was done by the Department then the same process contacting their Safety Office and ask for the Safety Officer at “MAIN OFFICE” and give the details of what happened. You will have to be detailed on a exact date, time, location and direction. I know you are upset but Remember being disrespectful to either the Contractor or the Department will get you nowhere. Believe me I know! Hope this helps.
It is the equivalent of taking a 12 gauge shotgun with #6 shot to it from about 12 yards. Oughta a be a hanging on use of this on such roads today. Man! It would tick us off!
