Home › Forums › Bass Cat Boats › Question for BCB only–Rick??
I was thinking today about something that was stated several weeks ago and thought I would ask for the sake of asking. My brother and I did this years ago with an 89 Sabre. In 1995, six years into owning, we put a Mariner Magnum 175 on the Sabre. Wow! GPS into 74 mph range with that boat. Couple of weeks ago, when talking about the rounded styling of the Eyra, someone said it was ahead of its time, but could not handle the engines of today. My question is, could the transom withstand a 175 Pro XS? I already have a 96 Magnum 175 hanging on the Detwiler hydraulic jackplate. I have an idea why it might or might not, but just curious. I already know about the investment vs return, cost, etc. Do not plan to sell boat as you know. Just from an engineering standpoint, “I gots to know!”96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I think Ive seen an Eyra with a 175 on it. Rick will not answer your question for legal reasons, but I will tell you that if you wanted you could put a 200 on it or more. HP ratings on boats are caculated using length and beam, not what a transom can withstand.
Phil, I know the Eyra is rated for 175…I bought a used one last May……..with the Magnum 175. Was up at Norfork Inn at the OI. I am wondering if the true rounded styling, which IS different from the styling now(no extensions/sponsons on either side of Eyra), would be able to handle the 175 Pro XS, which would be legal…even though we know theres more in it than 175 ponies. Only an idiot or speed demon would exceed the Coast Guard plates. I am neither.. But I cant catch a fish either so I might as well think about stuff! What also is interesting, is I had a Detwiler hydraulic mounted on the Eyra and the old CMC manual removed. The Detwiler is larger, more setback, does that affect anything? Do appreciate the input though…….. Not a direct answer to your question but we recently took in on trade a 1999 Eyra with a 175 Mercury and the transoms solid. Weve already resold it so Id have to call the customer to ask more details if you wanted them. Im not sure if there was much difference between the Eyra you have and the one I just sold but Rick could answer that for you.~Misty~ EKs Marine Service West Monroe, LA
I have no doubt, as Ive been running Cats since 89. Love touring the factory everytime I get to the OI. Gives me peace of mind having seen the construction technique grow throughout the years. I guess my whole question boils down to the engines themselves…I am pretty sure that 99 Eyra has an older 175 as well 96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
The transom on your Eyra is more than adequate for a 175, though your EFI is probably producing more usable ponies than the 175 Pro XS in my opinion. We dont think the newer engines in 2.5 blocks will run with those older EFI versions. Not even close! The newer EFI engines are not what the older ones, or hte XR-6 versions were either. In answer, it will handle it, as it already is handling more in all likelihood than the engine youa re asking about. You guys have been busy today! We are gonna have to get Scott and Gary on these posts! Rick
Ahhhhhhhh. Peace of mind! Of course it is an EFI, so with gas prices what they are the old gray Mare will have to settle for less stretching the legs out. Thats all I needed..again, thanks Rick and the rest of the guys!96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
