Quistion about storage under the seats

I have a 2003 Pantara Classic that has storage under the seats, there is a plastic cover that goes over the storage area under the seat, my quistion is if i take the plastic covers out will the seats be ok without them? Im not sure if they are there for extra support or to help keep water out.
