Im taking my 03 Cougar to Sherm to have new console installed. i currently have a x17 at the console and will be upgrading to a newer color model, possibly a side scanner. Anyways, im want to mount the unit with a ram mount instead of flush mounting (mainly because im going to go with a large screen and it wont fit flush mounted) what size would ram mount 1.5 or 2 inch ball would i need and how long should the “riser/shaft” be. I have seen many here and on BBC where guys ram mounted them. thanks for you input

If your going with a 997 SI, the ball size could be smaller than that. The larger ones are more secure, though not required. BCB

They are more expensive but go with the larger size like I did. After purchasing two HDS eights, I found there is more stability ram to boat and unit to ram with the larger. The smaller rams allowed the larger units a possible failure/accident at speed when experiencing rougher waters. You wouldnt want the units to fall, with this screen damage becomes possible. Glynn

Doug it depends on what unit you choose..On the 1197 or HDS10 I prefer the 2.25″ rubber ball design such as the RAM-D-111U-C or RAM-D-111U on smaller unit such as a 997 a 2″ is my choice.. Well get you fixed up when you bring the ol Cougar in… Sherm
