I have been just going through some past post to kill time here at work and back in June there was a question about rattling noise from motor area on a 250 Pro XS. I have this as well and have only written this off as the E-Ladder as this is the only thing i found lose enough and sounds close to the sound i am hearing.Well i see that most have had the same problem as i have had also, BCB says its coming from the motor mount. Could someone elaberate on this. I have checked bolts that mount the motor and jack plate , under the cowl and have found nothing by visual or hand inspection that seems out of the ordinary. As everyone has said, it only does it at a certain rpm then goes away. I just want to make sure im not over looking something and will become a problem down the road sometime.
They all do this and nothing to worry about !!
Hey Ice, Yep, most every Pro XS motor will “buzz” a little due to the solid (as opposed to rubber core) motor mounts. Most do it at the point the motor is just kind of floating and loose – usually at the point where there is no steering torque, the trim angle is just right, and the stars and planets are perfectly aligned. My 08 was a real buzzer, you could hear it coming from way, way down the lake. My 09 – not so much. It just now, after 160 hours, started buzzing. Nothing to worry about, as long as the “buzz” doesnt change – then you need take a look around. Good that you checked all the bolts. Not a bad idea for everyone every few weeks of hard use.
It is harmonics in the engine and nothing to worry about. It really has little to do with the motor mounts and everything to do with a little vibration around the 4k mark.
Hey folks— Just so everyone focuses for a second on how truly unique and special this website is–check the above two posts. You have a BASS ELITE Series champion AND the manufacturer of the boats both jumping in here to help answer concerns on an owners ENGINE–not the boat. No owners manual in the world gets you that kind of expertise in real time, in your face fashion. JD Powers needs to add a new award for Best in Class interactive owners manual! There are rattles, then there are rattles.I started hearing a different rattle about a month ago in my Pro XS 250 while at idle, lasted about two weeks then while fishing a club tournament at Kerr Lake on the Ark.River in Ok. the air pump locked up [15 miles from the ramp].My mechanic told me it was probably the the rattle that I had been hearing.
If it is the noise I have heard on my three pro xss it is just the harmonics of the carbon fiber reeds. My mechanics have told me dont worry. I would bet you dont hear it when you are at WOT.
If your mechanics told you the rattle is from the carbon fiber reeds, I would be changing mechanics. They do _not_ make a rattling noise. They make no noise you can hear. I have run em all, land & sea, boyesen, even hand-made from sheets of carbon fiber material.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
OT57 is right, reeds flutter though do not rattle. You wont hear fiber reeds flutter either. BCB
Youd think that if _any_ reed could be heard, it would be the usual stainless steel reeds in most motors. However, at 4000 RPM, they are bending open and snapping shut 4000 times a minute. At 6K rpm, you are looking at a very _low_ frequency tone, about 100hz. Which is _way_ down there. Not a rattle, not a buzz. You might be able to hear em if you take a stethoscope and hold it against the intake manifold while running. But there is so much other noise coming out of the motor, it would take a good ear.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
