rear tie down

Seems like when ever I store my boat and dont use it for a week or so there seems to be some black molasses looking stuff leaking out around my rear tie down eye on the back left side. I am wondering what this stuff is and if it is a concern. there is just a little bit of it, but i was wondering. I hate to be the bearer of bad new but it sounds like you have water in the transom. Pull it off and see what she looks like…make sure to reseal it. Good luck and I really hope I am wrong. Judd Lasiter

Judd is dead-on, unfortunately, if your boat is a pre-2001 model. Be sure and allow the boat ample time to dry out around the eye before resealing, and get the boat to a reputable shop so they can inspect the transom. Sounds like water intrusion could be bad. D.

Thanks guys i will check it out. Like i said there is just a little every once in a while. And the boat never has been stored on the water or been water logged so i am sure that this is a minor thing but will take off the eye and make sure it is dry and reseal it with silicone.

howiej58, Those older rigs would get most of hte water from the mounts for hte batteries and oil tanks. Folks would move the trays around and not seal those older holes, or they would pop a bracket loose and not remount them. Water then sucks in those small holes like a vacuum on a cool night. Pop the U Bolt once it dries some and reseal it. Keep an eye out for signs of excess weight, and otherwise enjoy it. If the weight shows up, then you may need a little Service on the rig. BCB

Thank you guys for all of your responses so quickly, I took off the eye last night and inspected it as best I could and everything looked really good and solid. I will leave the eye off for a few days and reseal later in the week. The wood and stuff inside was not wet or soft so I will just reseal and keep and eye out for future problems. And again thank you Bass Cat for this board and all other anglers that are out there to lend a hand. This is my second cat and looking forward to many more. Andrew Howard

It might not be necessary, but i swore if i kept another boat over five years i would de-rig(unbolt) the engine and re-seal the jackplate mounting on it as well. BCB may disagree with me here, but im strong on preventative maintenance ! D.
