hey guys im having reel problems and cant figure out whats wrong….i have a shimano sahara and shimano symetre and theyre doing the same thing…ill start out with them and they work fine for about 10 minutes but after a couple fish the reel starts feeling like its grinding and its not smooth and sometimes i struggle to start reeling when i set the hook on fish i tried to oil them but its not working…any tips?
Have you actually taken them apart and cleaned them before oiling. If not they may have trash or a broken parts inside and you are just adding to the problem by still using and just oiling them. The least amount of oil and grease you can use the better.( I.E. one drop per cleaning per bearing.) You can download the reel diagrams at Shimanos website.
thanks alot i was just afraid that if i took em apart id forget wherethe parts went ha
In my old age, the memory aint what it used to be. Now when I get into anything involved, I bring out the old digital camera and take a picture each time I open a new project (home, boat, truck) and document each step so I can retrace my steps. Just takes a second and can review picture right on camera so you dont need to down load on PC. But if you need a bigger picture, can hook it up to the laptop/PC or put the memory card in the HD TV. Technology doesnt always suck.Sounds like you got some dirt/grit in your reels and just needs a good cleaning. Ive got those reels too and Ive never had a problem. Im not good about cleaning/oiling them either. They are all at least two years old and some older. Only spinning reels I own. Quantum for my BCs.
First thing I would do is clean them. As far as taking them apart, there is usually no need to disassemble the side with the handle on it as far as baitcasts are concerned. Take the opposite side off and the spool out. Locate the bearings, one on each side of the spool, and clean those as well and use good reel oil on them. I prefer quantum oil, but some may chime in on what they use. good luck
Ive got the same problem with an AG and a Browning I have. Some dirt/grit has gotten into your worm gear for your line guide. Take a can of WD40 and blow that crap out of the worm gear. If that doesnt work youll need to take it apart down to the worm gear and clean it.- Chaz
Old way, dip in water then cast. Also clean in dishwasher!!Last edited by SAMRUSH on August 10th, 2011, 5:35 am, edited 1 time in total.BAYOU BANDIT
You do not have to totally disassemble the reel but you need to get it down enough to clean it, which as one said is at least the off side plate and spool out. If your worried about losing your place or a part, get a plano 3700 with all the dividers in and pull 1 piece at a time and put it in a compartment in the order you took them out, and reverse to put it back together. Ive pulled so many apart that I forget how intimidating all those little parts an be. Just dont get in a hurry, I use a pan of dishwater w/Dawn detergent to clean the parts, and then oil and grease them as they go together. As I stated before though, dont put more than one drop of oil per bearing, and as little grease on gears as possible. One great tip I got years ago was to take the little books that come with your reels and enlarge the diagram, and put them in a binder so that if you need to know where a part goes you can see it easily and without a magnifying glass.
