Reel/Rod setup for Alabama rig

Hi, I have set up the reel/rod for Alabama rig. I use Trion 6.4 reel with 50lb braid on BCB Backbone rod which is 74″, extra-heavy, 17 – 25 lb, and 1/4 – 1 oz. I have never fished with it but practiced in my backyard pool. I need to know whether the setup is right or not. I seem to feel that crank the 6.4 reel is hard and can imagine that it will worn out my arm… I wonder if I should use 5.1 reel instead? Whats your reel/rod/line setup?

I use a Shimano Corado with a 6.3 with a 76″ MED/HEAVY Shimano Convergence rod. To me personaly, Heavy or ext/Heavy is to stiff to cast the distance I want. And probably will wear your arm out. I like that flexer tip to give me that sling shot of a cast.

I use a Kistler Z-Bone ST Umbrella Rig Special 711″ Heavy, Moderate Tip 14-65lb 1to 4oz rod coupled with the LEWS TP1S Right 5.4:1 6.9oz 10BB + 1RB 12lb/150yd spool loaded with Sufix 832 Braid Lo-Vis Green 50lb. This is a “SWEET” set up. The rod tip loads up nicely and slings the rig forever. I have found the moderate rod tip to be the key factor in getting the distance desired. Lews 5-4 reel and Kistler 76″ all day power rod. 50 power pro.

Brian is right on with the Kistler A Rig rod, a swim bait/a rig rod loads up and will heave it a mile. A flipping stick will wear you out. Ive got an Okuma swimbait rod and the KIstler Z Bone Umbrella rig rod. Both work great, when I first tried an alabama rig I threw it on a flopping stick and swore I would never throw it again..

The new Denali A-rig rod is great. Scott that makes them was an employee right here at BCB.

I like the okuma 711″ heavy swimbait rod. Casts good and loads up perfectly on a fish. I use a curado 300 or the Cardiff 300 with 65 pound braid. Check out this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/wa…ure=youtube_gdata_player

a 711″ rod with a 5:4 reel….. rod and reel of your choice. i personally use an Abu rod and Lews reel. Use 50lb or higher braid.
