Wanted to relay our recent experience in hopes that others may be better prepared. Our home was broken into last week while the wife and kids were out. they came in through a steel entry door that they beat repeatedly until the framing gave way. they grabbed electronics and video games, tv, lap tops and camera equipment. Some things we have learnedif they want in they will find a way, but some things we could have done differently, there are several products out there that can wedge the door handle and the floor making it more difficult to bust in, we now have those installed as well as secondary locks and bars on the sliding patio doors.I have not done a good job of retaining receipts and serial numbers, the police really do like to have these, and the insurance folks like to know what you paid and when you bought items. Dont keep this info on your computer because when they steal the computer you have nothing left.(found out the hard way)Flat screen tvs are much easier to steal now due to the light weight, we had ours sitting on a cabinet, just unplug and go! I found some of the wall mounts allow you to actually lock the tv to the mount with a pad lock and that is what we now have. Get a safe and use it, keep all your important docs in the safe including credit card info, we didnt and have spent a lot of time cancelling and having cards reissued.lastly have an alarm system installed, they may help and are cheap compared to cost and hassle of a break in.They passed right by thousands of dollars of fishing equipment so we feel real lucky, and the kids have settled back down and seem to be getting back into the swing of things.Treat everyday like it might be the last
Sorry to hear that for your family, but if there is some good in that bad it is that no one was home so that means that your family was not physically harmed. About 8 years ago or so my wife lost a Aunt and 2 cousins in a similar case but they were home and all three of there lives were taken by being stabbed to death, a hard lesson that we learned from that was not leaving knife sets on the counters as many people do. Hopefully the Police will be able to catch them and justice will be served.Robbie
Video the gear and put the video in a safety deposit box, with serial numbers videod and make sure you keep updating the format. Amazing what we forget we have until we go looking for it and it is gone. BCB Admin.
Its a shame that our world has become this way. I can remember when my family in N.C. didnt lock there house and could not find a key if you asked.
We also found out that our bank offers a free safe deposit box so that is where we are storing our data as well as on my company secured server.Had not thought about knife set on counter, sounds like I will be making another change tonight when I get home.Treat everyday like it might be the last
We were broken into about 10 yrs ago , Still have a Ruger Red Hawk with a red dont scope floating out there somewhere , had all the # but it hasnt surfaced yet , bought a gun safe and store all important paper work in there , of course all my weapons to . Well about 3 yrs ago we came home and we had been broken into ..except this time they got nothing , everything was in the safe and they were after the weapons . Had a real good idea who it was just from some evidence left behind , but not enough to arrest and charge . I do have my CCW and one days was comming into my housing area and there the kid stood , I pulled up by him and had my Kimber 45 laying on the consol of my truck ( where he could see it ) and told him to let all his friends know that if i caught them in my house they just might not make it back out ! To this day we have had zero ploblems on our street , it may not have been the political correct thing to do but it sure got my point across !! and yes we also had a alarm system installed on the house . Since then my wife also has taken her CCW class, and does carry when she is comming home after dark and Im not going to be there ,,ya just never know
Both my wife and I are going to complete our Course work and apply for our permits and do the same, we live out of town and that makes it a little worse on my nerves, I know she wouldnt hesitate nor would I in order to protect our kids. we are alos looking into replacing our recently departed canine as an additional preventerTreat everyday like it might be the last
