Replacing lower unit and need info!

Hey guys, My boat is currently at the shop for what seems to be a blown lower unit… I dont have the exact details of what the exact damage is yet but I think I will be needing a new/used lower unit.My motor is a 1999 Merc EFI 200hp rebuilt by Sherm a few years ago.The dealer says he has a lower unit in stock for $1500.00 installed with a 3 year warranty but its a 2:0:1 gear ratio and most of the LU Im looking at for my 2.5 are 1.87:1 … Should I even consider the 2:0:1 ?Also… what are the advantages of a TorqueMaster over a regular LU and is it worth it?Thanks in advance!

No way id take a unit with that ratio when i could get a 1.75. The efficiency of a 28-29 pitch prop typically isnt as good as a 26-27. Id get a real one.C.O.D. Jr. III

You meant 1.87 ratio right? Or can I really get a 1.75?Also.. any place I can look for a LU besides the for sale forum on BBC?And last question… how do I know the ratio of my current possibly blown LU?Thanks Ward.. really appreciate your quick responses.

I am better at brp lower units but I assume youre right on the 1.87. The torquemaster I believe is 1.75.The problem in the suzuki that BCB ran was the 2.08:1(I believe) ratio. 2 is pretty tall and I think would require quite a bit more pitch than you have been using. The 250 needed a 30 pitch prop….BRP has run the remans done with BRP parts through a single source for years, mercury doesnt do single source but there are leaders in numbers.I would call 501-372-0985 and ask Josh if he has one or if he can get you what you had. Obviously get a price from him. Ask him where hed go for a good merc reman as well. I imagine Josh will know.C.O.D. Jr. III

Your engine came with a 1.87 case. The 2:00 will require a different propeller than the standard wheel. We have run both and there is really no significant difference otherwise, unless it is older then we prefer the 2:00 case as they were straight gear units and not spiral. BCB
