I need to reprop my 150 intruder, Im not getting enough RPMS or speed. I have a 94 pantera with a 94 150hp intruder, it sounds like its the twin of a post someone else made yesterday. the 24 inch raker doesnt let me get the RPMS up any more. Over the years I have messed with pad height and fought other engine issues so I never went back and checked it. Engine problems are now fixed. I took it out Thursday, moderate load, 20 gal gas and me with livewell full and got 48 mph at 4800 rpm, it popped up really fast on plane and checked the prop and it was 5-1/4 inches below the pad. So i adjusted to 3-3/4 and went out with my wife and dog and the performance went down, it worked a lot harder to get on plane (duh) but top end was 42mph at 4400 rpm. I dont have a water pressure gage but it had a good a hard stream. I have a 25 inch gade and it runs almost identical, 100 prm difference. So what prop would work best with this engine to get my rpms up.Several years ago it ran 60mph, over the years it dropped off, I had some minor enigine issues worked on and now it runs great, everything is checked out.Good even compression, I dont remember what they were but techs commented they would be midrange of modern 150s, replaced carb bowels, new reeds, plugs, etc. It runs hard up to 4200 prm, half throttle, then it just creeps up.
Years ago i had a 92 Pantera 11 with a 150 Johnson Fast Strike. The best prop was a 23 Renegade and it wouldscoot pretty good…
My dad and I had an evenrude intruder on our Stratos 270. I believe we had to have the prop custom tuned as a 3 blade 24 was too slow and a 26 spun the RPMs too high. (I think that was right but it could have been the other way. Been a while) But we started working with a 25 pitch 3 blade stainless and had a guy the dealer knew tweet it until we got the 5600 rpm at full trim. Not sure if that helps any but I am trying to help.
There is more wrong than the propeller on this rig if it only runs 48 or so with a load and that propeller. Even though the compression checks out there is something wrong somewhere and if not the engine then perhaps the boat.
I would certainly agree with BassCat on this one….BUT to give you an idea of props….I had a 1992 Sabre with a 1992 Evinrude Intruder and asked what prop was recommended. The following is a link to the question and response. http://basscatowners.yuku.com/topic/455 … truder-150Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
On this engine, 4800 is too low on the rpms. The speed your getting does not even closely match the rpms. It would be reasonable to expect the rpms on this rig to hit in the 5200-5600 range with much better performance. On this engine and the FastStrike 150, there were a few issues with the carb linkage binding, and not opening all the way for the high speed jets to kick in. Not saying that is what is wrong with your rig, but it needs to be checked.
I have no idea what could be wrong with the boat. I have fought this rpm issue for a long time, there are almost no people around that do carb engines so I have to identify the problem then have someone try to fix it. Each time they start with a tuneup so its had 6 in 7 years and I only get about 15 hours a year on it.While doing this post I continued to research, I may have found the problem and have ordered a throttle roller.Crossing my fingers. If not its time for a new prop
Call Blaine Schwarzel Marine in Ohio, he might be able to guide you through your problem over the phone!he and his father have been working on ALL outboards for a LOOOOONG TIME!!(740) 667-3370
With engine cover off, have someone move the throttle linkage while you are at the back of the engine. Look to see if it appears to have full travel. These engines had a plastic ball/insert that was pretty well known for hanging, especially with age.
Go over to BBC to the Johnson/Evinrude forum. Lots of help available there for these engines and propping. Fred (username “Championman”) is one of the moderators, a tech, and seems like he knows these engines very well. Your rpms should be 5500-5600. All the years I ran the Intruders/Venoms I had good performance with the Renegade props.
