Non Bass Cat question
Which lake would you choose for your retirement home?
My wife and I are nearing our retirement and would like to find a house on a lake. We are focusing in the South East area, but would like to hear opinions for other areas. Currently we have a summer cottage on Lake Wisconsin, but would like to move to a warmer climate. We will be in our retirement years so health facilities, access to airports and of course costs come into consideration. We would also like to find a lake that allows for a private pier along with boat lifts.
Thank you
-Bob
You need to really travel to different areas to see what your family likes the best.
I live in Florida and enjoy fishing the St. Johns river. Lived in Ohio and love Lake Erie. Fished a lot in between. I have never fished out west. But, my favorite destination that I have been to is Lake Murray, SC.
Lake Tahoe in Northern California could be an option.
What climate are you after is the largest question. You can find amenities, airports and hospitals close to many good reservoirs.
Do you want arid, four seasons, a long summer or are you looking for the mountains?
If you’re into seasonal change then I would look into the Lake of the Ozarks area. Most everything you mentioned that appeals to you is here. The only exception being scheduled airlines, Springfield or St. Louis good options. The market here has been pretty hot so you might want to do a quick search online and check it out, Fun lake.com is one place to look!
Good luck!
Chuck and you forgot to say that besides Lake of the Ozarks (all within 2 to 2 1/2 hours of the Springfield MO area) you have the following:
Truman Lake
Grand Lake OK
Pome de Terre
Stockton Lake
Table Rock Lake
Lake Tanneycomo
Bull Shoals
Beaver Lake, Arkansas
Lake Norfolk, Arkansas
All of them are outstanding.
All Thank you for the replies.
We have spent a lot of time at LOZ and always thought it would be our retirement location. However, some of our family has retired to FL and we are considering something closer such as Smith or another lake in that region.
SGT93 – I agree 100% that we will need to travel and spend time in areas thus the reason for the post. The thought is to narrow it down to a region or several lakes, visit, then possibly try to rent for a period prior to moving.

Chicagobass,
since you have family in Florida, have you considered some of those lakes like the Butler Chain around Orlando, then there’s Lake Conway with waterfront homes on the lake. Both are a lot of fun to fish and the lakes are easy to get around on when the wind blows. There are many options in Florida.
There are a lot of options between, like Lake Martin in lower AL, and Guntersville is always a good one to look at. Then there are smaller mountain lakes all over the Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama ridges that offer gorgeous mountain settings, clean water and fair fishing. Most are closer to good health care and local hospitals provide some solid resources in many.
We like Taneycomo around Branson, Norfork and Bull Shoals are home, though on water residences, with docks, are harder to come by. Small lakes are often overlooked and they are a treasure of fishing if you respect the reservoirs.
Also upper river areas are overlooked as well, as they are usually distanced from municipal areas. That same is true on all our mountain reservoirs in the Ozarks.
good luck in your search!
The one without cell service or internet. Just an old landline for emergencies and talking to the grandkids…….

Like you said, most of those lakes about 2.5 hours from “Springfield, Mo.” , from Osage Beach add another 1 to 2 hours on driving time, depending on how many speed laws you want to break!! Both Osage Beach and Lake Ozark are small but very active!! The Shoot Out starts the 20th. that should be wild, come on and check it out!!
And Mr. SLumpp, you forgot Mark Twain Lake !!
I would recommend the northeast Texas area. There are 10-15 good fishing lakes within an hour from Lake Fork in northeast Texas.
