I have a 2000 Classic that I am looking to purchase rod holders for on both sides! Man I wish I would have ordered them from the factory! Everytime I go in and remove 1 rod – I have a mess. even if I roll line around each rod. Does anyone recommend any product? Is there a website I can view? Thanks Sam
I built this myself using a cutting board and 15 golf club tubes. It is fairly easy to do, but can be tricky to match to the curve of the rod box. Cost me about $25 total, and Im sure you could even do better than that with some research. Several others have done this also. Id be glad to give specific instructions if you are interested. I also cut a slit in the top to hold my Golden Rule. Oh, and this does eliminate all tangling of rods, and I have not had any problems with damaging rods while getting them in/out. My boat is a 2002 Classic. Kent Kent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
That should get an attaboy this month Kent! We like what Kent has done though would not fill the front in and would leave an opening underneath like factory models.
Thanks BCB. I agree that leaving an opening under the rod organizer is a good idea. I have found that this organizer doesnt work well for spinning rods, but I dont use much spinning gear anyways. I built this specifically for my needs, and I realize that it might not be perfect for everyone. But, it will give others an idea of how to do this if they desire. Kent – thats pretty awesome. Looks like I will be going to Home Depot & Golf World this weekend. Could you please pass on the details. Thanks Sam
OK, Ill try to give the best instructions that I can: To get the shape of the box, start with a piece of cardboard cut out to fit upright in the box at the location you want the organizer. Then take pieces of plastic straws and tape them with the tips touching the rod box at each corner. Also, tape a few extra straws on the bottom so that you can get a better line on the curvature. Take the cardboard/straws out and lay it on a big piece of cardboard. Trace out all the corners and the curvature of the bottom onto the cardboard. Cut to shape. Put this cardboard template back in the rod box to make sure your shape is the way you want it, and make any changes that are needed. Then, trace that shape onto your cutting board and cut out with a jig saw. You can use your cardboard template to draw out tube locations until your satisfied with placement. Buy as many tubes as you would like in the organizer (I bought the oversized tubes from BPS to make it easier to get rods in/out). I used a hole saw that was the same size as the golf tubes to cut holes in the cutting board. Oh, if you want to cut the slit for the Golden Rule, just measure a spot and drill pilot holes at the ends and use a jig saw to cut the line. Once youve got that done, its time to place the organizer in the rod box. Mine is not mounted at all. It is cut to fit tight. Mine is just tapped into place lightly, and the carpet holds it in place (shouldnt be wedged overly tight). Last thing to do is slide all your golf tubes into their holes. My golf tubes are not attached either since the tubes fit very tight in the holes. They have a small lip on the outer edge that keeps them from getting pushed through the holes. You could glue them if needed, but mine seem to be fine without glue. That should give you a good place to get started. Mine has 15 tubes, and I can fit 7 rods in all the tubes without any problems. Like mentioned earlier, I made mine for baitcasting rods, and longer spinning rods will not fit very well. I also have no organizer at the rear of the box. I just lay my rods in there, and the reels stack nicely. I was going to make a rear organizer, but have decided against it because I dont think its necessary. I think it might be more of a hindrance than a help. You might also think about what BCB said about leaving some room under the organizer for extra storage (that would help with spinning rods also). I didnt because I wanted to fit as many rods as possible in that box. Hope that helps, and good luck with the project. KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
