Dmoore58 and I got out in the rough stuff yesterday with strategy to get up to the dam for protection from what we new was going to be a windy day out of the North. The day started at 7am in 44° air temps and we got off water at 12 noon with air temps dropping to 37°. We fished what the locals call middle pond (Yates Lake). Its an 8 mile long reservoir bellow Lake Martin in Alabama. Theres maybe 5-8 houses on the lower end of the lake. I”ve been on Canadian fly in trips and you get that same feel when you are on this lake. Beautiful water.Open Water Rodeo Time:On this smaller size reservoir with wind howling the waves were rolling and they were not small. I would estimate rollers to be about 2 feet plus. For those who are experienced with small inland reservoirs can appreciate 20 plus winds with gusts to 30 mph on a 7 plus mile return trip (no picnic). The Sabres ride in this stuff was beyond impressive. The boat easily got on top of these rollers, stayed there and was making the best of a bad water. After we got off the lake going across the bridge you could see the wind blowing water over the top of the lower dam. No B.S. It was howling. There is no smooth ride in rough stuff but there are smoother rides in rough stuff and staying on top of those rollers is where I want to be.What BassCat builds is impressive. Sure like their large poly flake gels and cool looking hull length lightening bolt but after yesterday I got a chance to experience their depth of what distinguishes their craftsmanship. BassCat dont know how you do it, dont care just glad I have your boat. The only thing better yesterday after I got off the water was the five minute ride to my daughters home in Tallassee. She had home made white chili and turkey sandwhiches waiting on us when we got there. Last edited by Flyswatter on February 12th, 2012, 7:12 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Roller coaster waves is almost an understatement. Fished the BFL choo choo on guntersville and it was rough to say the least. Had a 40 mile boat ride to the north and it made me very glad that i own a cat. If i owned any other brand boat Im sure we would have been wet from the ride. It still only took about 40 minutes to get there in that rough water to.
Tom have you lost your mind? No way I would be out in that yesterday. You are still a Yankee deep down to fish in that.

Even caught one on Luck E Strikes RC Stick too. That spicy white chili was off the chain good too.JR, Where did you go? Mud Creek? That is one drive. Cant imagine that drive in the winds yesterday. Yep, glad you were in a cat.
Chester I couldnt agree with you more. I gave Fly 2 chances to back out. Once Friday night and again at 3:30am Sat. morning. Sent him the wind advisories both times. Each response was “Im still going”. Personally I thought he was nuts but I went with him anyway. It was a nightmare out there. Guntersville had to be like a bad day on the high seas. Fly was right about the Sabre FTD being pretty impressive out there but I think I would have prefered us to be in my Jaguar. The best thing that came out of the day besides getting home in one piece was the 10 nice fillets I put in the freezer and that hot chili his daughter made for us. That was a nice touch to the day

I think Fly has “Felt the Rush” one two many times and has a real problem.
Fly i went to town the wind wasnt bad once i got past waterfront. There wasnt too many boats that made the run like usual.
Justin, You had a bassCat advantage out there. Good on you.
One thing I could do in the Sabre that I have not mastered in the Cougar is to Tac the waves. I cannot turn the Cougar on the crest fast enough. With the Sabre I could snap it around on the crest so I could see before dropping in and ride the tops one way or another . It takes A BUNCH longer to get from point A to point B this way but Ive had people with me that were AMAZED where I would take a 18 footer with this method. I learned this fishing Santee Cooper back in the 80s. I think it was the SEBCOG before last when my partner and I made a stop where the waves were hitting me in the knees where I was cranking. I let it fill the boat with the bilge pump running above the step up cooler. It was ROLLING that day!!! Once I got on plane we got sprayed but never took one wave over the bow even with all that water weight in the boat. Needless to say he thought I was nuts LOL. Like I said I have not been able to throw the Cougar around like this as of yet. It would take some crazy big water to make a turn that big. It swallows two footers as depending on the span. Glad you had a safe day.
I would of loved to have weighed in Marshall Deakins culls yesterday after i looked at won the trnamnt ( 32lbs sack ) on the computer and the co had 25lbs . Marshall must have learned to fish it after last fall .I wonder if he had 5 frogs attached to it
