I am brand new to BCB and looking forward to getting out and using it… My previous boat was a 2003 ranger 205vs with an 2002 225 hp optimax. In rough water 2 ft waves or greater I needed to run mercury hi 5 prop otherwise prop was coming out of the water otherwise a good easy to drive stable fishing boat for Erie or inland..

my new to me Puma has a 2014 250hp pro Xs with a 3 blade.. will I need to run the 5 blade on the puma ftd in similar conditions? Puma has atlas hydraulic plate as well..

i had the ranger for17 years so basically ran the 5 blade all the time.. wasn’t too concerned about speed..

anyone care to comment regarding their Puma or cougar in same conditions? I am reading this Puma can be fun to drive !! Thanks! – bob CLE area OH

I’m surprised no responses yet to your post . — I have no Puma experience to give you , as I run a Pantera , but from what I’ve experienced with ” rough water ” boating , you have the perfect setup for it . — 4 blade should be a good prop choice , and just lower the jackplate to get her to ” bite ” a little better as needed . — Your ” kitty ” is a whole different animal than you had in the 205 , so seat time is going to be the best teacher you can have . — Just be careful , and above all else , enjoy !! – Hoss

Fury 4 – 24 pitch would be a good rough water prop.

If your 3 blade prop is a Fury you won’t have any problems. If not then you would be better with a 4 blade Fury for rough water only.

Ive been running a 25/4 blade fury on my 17 puma pro xs 250 with poles with good success. It gives alot of stern lift and I had to lower my manual plate down about 3/8″. Boat will top at 75.5 @5910. If your in cooler climates you could probably get a bit more out of it with a 26/4 if you run the boat loaded heavy Id get the 25/4. Some also like the bravo xs. Although its quite more expensive and you dont see as many reports about it. With that hydraulic plate, I had one on my caracal and I had a 24/4 on it… I would bump the plate down about 1 spot below what ever I ran on the gauge and the ride would change alot when plopping/ crusing over wave crests.
