Well guys I need some ideas from some smart people so I started Here. I have a 2006 Puma with a 225 pro xs WIth a 26 tempest. Im running with 53 gallons of gas and 500lb of fisherman with my partner in the boat. Im only turning 5300 rpms. I tried a 25 trophy new and a 25 trophy old style All I could turn was 5600 I tried raising the motor and lowering the motor. no change. This is after it was rebuilt and the break in time has been completed. When it blew up and they hooked the computer to it the highest it had turned was 5600. Does any one have any ideas before I put it in the shop again since it is a hour drive 1 way and I have a tournament next weekend!!
You picked up 300 rpm from a 1″ drop in pitch, which is within the expected range. 5600 is within the 5500-6000 rpm range I believe they recommend. If you want to turn it up a bit, you might need to drop another inch in pitch… It is also possible, if you were turning the old prop faster before the rebuild, that you might just need new plugs as they reset the break-in timer after a rebuild, and the extra oil can foul the plugs, which optis dont like…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
While we do not prefer a Tempest, many run one on the 07 and prior hull. We prefer a Trophy, though we do not know the numbers you are turning on top end? RPMs you gave us, though how are you running?
Sounds like initially you were trying to turn to big a wheel. Especially if 5600 RPM is the highest that 225 XS has ever turned. Just think if thats winter time numbers what the summer numbers must have been. That motor had to be experiencing loading or lugging. It sounds like your carring a lot of fuel, tackle and a**. Like oldtimer57 says you definatly need to go down in pich to a 25. You might think about a custom prop for your needs.Your motor is not even breathing at 5600. Hey this is a Merc, turn that monster loose, it should be turning 6000 in the cooler temps. I talked this morning to someone about your rebuild. There are a lot of varibles to consider. Was this a Merc factory rebuild? Did they send you a new power head or was this a machine shop rebuild? I was told when Mercury sends a powerhead to be used for the rebuild theres traditionally a few RPM lost. Dont know the reasons but this is what he has experienced. And yes Mercury has been asked about this with the answer all their power heads are the same. Another thing, did they go ahead and replace the injectors and also the reeds for the intake. These can be issues also. The other thing I was told is after the rebuild there should be a gain of 100 to 200 RPM after about Ten hours on the motor. I believe before I complained about this Id go with the smaller wheel ,let the motor get a few hours on it and see what happens then. Im not going to go into a machine shop rebuild. Good Luck! Glynn
This is a power head from mercury with the 26 on we where turning 5200 took exhaust ring off turns 5600. With hydraulic lift I have raised and lowered it in as little increaments as possible does not make any differance the only thing will change is how high the rooster tell will get. The engine sounds like it is running smoth but all I can get is 5600 rpms and 63mph with two people in the boat. I have not run it with just one person in the boat for any time at all may try that tommarrow and see what I get.
Something is up on this rig. Your performance is way below average and you need some help. Please contact [email protected] and tell them your information. Please give them your dealer information, performance with both powerheads and any other information. They will need history of ownership, name and phone number where you can be reached. They will be in touch after they bounce it around. Though this is the Classic week and several are out of town who would help here.
