How much of a time period does an engine sit between trips is considered to long. Its been 7 weeks since I took my boat out and was wondering if I need to run it on the drive way with water hook-ups (my neighbors love this). It usually does not sit this long but Im newly married and I had no idea “things just all the sudden come up” like they do now. The engine is a 250 xs and the fuel has treatment …..Just curios if theres an issue with letting it sit this long.ThanksBrian
Brian – Hang in there Im sure some of the folks will chime in. I would like to know myself! Here in WV my boat has to be in the garage from October/November to April (depending on weather We had snow all day on Wednesday 4-23-09 couldnt believe it!). When taking it out for the first time of spring I do hook a water line to it and flush out everything. Than put ear muffs of it and run it a little in the driveway (being out in the country I dont have to worry about neighbors, Just dogs, cows, horses I dont think they mind though). Steve
I can tell you what I do, and have been doing for almost 20 years on the same 1992 XR6. I run it at least weekly for the fishing season, usually 2-3 times per week during the summer. When it gets too cold to fish, I start a mental timer and once a month, I push the boat back out of the garage until the motor hangs outside the door (boat is parked nose-in for space reasons). I hook up the muffs, crank the motor and let it idle until the water from the tell-tale is hot and steaming. I shut it off and repeat in 3-4 weeks. No fogging oil, no nothing, no problems. Do not pull the fuel line and run it dry until it dies. In the case of a non-DFI motor, and particularly in a carbed motor, one carb will run dry first, and now you have two cylinders getting no fuel. And no oil. EFIs will also start to run lean before they die. And if they are not getting gas, they are not getting oil. I do keep stabil in the tank during the winter, but only during the winter. I burn enough gas in the other 8-9 months or so to keep it fresh. After 17 years, this motor still has 120-125 psi compression in all 6 cylinders, still runs 5800 rpm, idles as good as a carbed motor can idle, which is not that smooth but does not go dead. The concern is sticking rings and such on these and letting fuel destabilize in the system on the engine. Running fuel through it does keep those in better shape. We are not overly concerned with the 6 to 8 week layoff. That is not a problem, though it would be if you patterned that usage. They can sit for three (3) months with little issue, and we have seen more. Though some show problems in the long term down the road related to sitting idle.
Thanks Guys, Ill pull it out on the drive way in the morning and run it for awhile, maybe Ill sit on the front casting deck and act like Im fishing. But then the neighbors walking by might ask how many I caught so far ….then that will piss me off. I should have had an amendment in the marriage license that allowed me to fish on the weekends during the spring and any violation to this would terminate my wife from getting her nails done (and thats weekly). I would be fishing every weekend………what was I thinking. I heard the newness will be gone next year so this probably is an isolated issue.Run it for about 20 to 30 min?ThanksBrian
The newness only leaves if you and she allow it. Some last forever for a reason. They do change, though just try to keep it new.
