Hey everybody!!I cant decide between a Sabre FTD or a Pantera II. I am not sure I need the extra length, motor, and cost for my first boat, but I dont know what I dont know. Any thoughts or guidance from those “in the know”?Tony
Tony, you have seen what I put in my boat and what options I added.I say get the options you want on the Sabre FTD and max out your electronics. Also agree with sdfd504 below.Last edited by dblplasabre on March 9th, 2010, 6:08 pm, edited 1 time in total.
It is always best to get the biggest boat you can afford off or fit in the garage off the bat. That way you dont have to keep second guessing yourself as to if you made the right choice or not.
If you get the PII you will never second guess your self. The performance is dramatically better w/ the PII
CiK, I dont think the price difference between a well equipped sabre FTD and a Pantera II is enough to justify not getting the Pantera II. Probably $3000-$5000 if all equipment is comparable. ( I could be a little off. Its been a couple of years since I priced new boats ) You are the only one who can decide if your financial situation can handle the extra expense. That is still a chunk of change, but in the long run you will probably be happier with your purchase if you go with the bigger, faster, better rough water handling boat in the Pantera II. The Sabre FTD is a wonderfull 18 foot boat. Its the best 18 foot boat on the market. If you want an efficient package and are not worried about going 70 + mph and you are a little limited on storage space then it may be the way to go. I just find the 19 foot class of boat to be the perfect size. Not too big to be very efficient and manueverable in the shallows and still big enough to give you the ride in the rough stuff and you can hang enough ponies off the back to get the speed that most will be satisfied with. If you can handle the larger boat financially, then make a list of why you wouldnt want the bigger boat. You probably wont come up with much. Good luck in your decision and remember. No matter which one you choose you cant go wrong. They are both wonderfull setups. Either way youll get super performing rig with looks to kill and youll be buying from the best company in the industry. Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
I spent the money on the FTD with the 175 Pro XS, top of the line electonics and GPS on both ends, many other extras and have not been dissatisfied. Fishing by myself 90% of the time, it fits me to a tee. Performance is really great from stem to stern. I originally wanted a PIV, but after looking at the numbers and the tournament usage, the Sabre FTD has worked well for me. Everyone is different with needs and finances. Its your call!!
You cant go wrong with either boat. Like everyone has said, just weigh your wants and needs and go from there. When I decided I wanted to get rid of my Baycat, I gave a lot of thought to not getting another Cougar (I had a 06 before the Baycat) I had it down to a PII and a Sabre. I just decided that after having a 20 boat, I didnt want to give that up. In retrospect, I would have probably been better off financially to get a PII, but I am very happy with my CougarFTD.
This is where talking with a trusted dealer and describing what you expect out of the boat, storage area size, etc… is handy. Then they can make suggestions on packages and incentives that may help you out. Talk to the dealer about all this before you start asking about “how much is it” and I bet you two can come up with a great fit for YOU. Good luck!
Thanks everybody! I have some deciding to do. I dont care how hard it is, its a good decision to have. Ron, you have been especially helpful, and I appreciate that a lot. Thanks!
I dont think you will be wrong with either, the 19 does have a lot of storage. I have 20 hrs on my Optimax now and averaged 6.8 mpg while cruising at about 60 mph yesterday. Just order what you want in the way of options, I got the PII Advantage Elite package and added a rod organizer in the right side, a dual console (my son and I fish together), moved the HB 788 from the console to the front and replaced the HB 778 that was up front with a 798 in the console. The two HBs are connected with the HB Interlink System. I do wish now I had thought about the Sony with Ipod connection. I do feel that this is the best 19 boat made, very glad sdfd504 helped us decide on a BC. I do highly recommend smart gauges for what ever outboard you choose.
