I finally got my jackplate installed earlier this week and got to take it out for a test run today. I was quite impressed with the results. (2008 Sabre, 150 EFI)I know BCB has stated that they prefer the Sabre without the jackplate but I respectfully disagree. I ran without the plate for a year (factory installed on the 2nd hole from the top) which had the motor buried at 5.5″ below the pad. Some issues I had before installing the plate were: 1) WOT rpms were only 5400-5500 with a top speed of 58-61 depending on load. Great holeshot but I wanted to get the full RPM range.2) Motor could not be fully trimmed up to access trim fluid reservoir.3) Transom saver had to be cut to a short stubby version.4) I had to be carefully when coming off plane or the backwash would get on the rear deck. After installing the 8″ 6 hole Slidemaster and todays trial run with plate set to 1/4″ above flush, riding solo with light load, 3/4 tank and empty livewell:1) WOT 5700 with a top speed of 63. Holeshot was unchanged.2) Motor can now be fully trimmed up to access trim fluid reservoir.3) Transom saver is no longer a shorty .4) No worries about backwash when coming off plane. In addition the motor can be fully trimmed down without hitting the concrete in the garage.5) The boat seemed to ride much better especially in the chop. Required much less trim when running wot.Overall I am very impressed with the plate. I was getting right at 20 psi water pressure at 1/4″ above flush on the plate. Could I go further up with even better results? Perhaps going up to a 24P tempest or Fury as well? Last edited by psj706 on May 10th, 2013, 2:42 am, edited 1 time in total.
BCB has stated you do not need a plate on a Sabre for the cost vs. returns.
bump for other Sabre owners to chime in on jackplate height and opinions on Fury props.
07 Sabre FTD with a 150 Optimax, 6″ SM jackplate set at flush, 23P Tempest Plus. Best run has been just over 62 @ 5400. Never have run higher RPMs than that. I will say I was able to move my TM batteries to the passenger side and lighten the laod in the front and gain 1-2 MPH. I run a light tackle load and 1/2 – 3/4 fuel on most days. The 23 Tempest seems to be the best all around prop for my rig. Awesome holeshot, great midrange torque, corners like a BMW, excellent fuel efficency, and gives me all the top end I need. I know there are slight differences in rig weights, motor specs, etc., the EFI might be a little hotter engine than the Opti. Id love to get my hands on a 24 Tempest and play around with the plate to see how it performs. Im sure one of the Sabre guys with an EFI can tell you if you can turn a 24. Regardless, enjoy the Sabre. Awesome rig.Last edited by RazorCat on May 13th, 2013, 12:20 am, edited 1 time in total.
I have a XR-6 (Carbed not fuel injected) 150hp on the back of my Sabre with a 6 inch Slide Master also. I run my plate at a half inch to 3/4 inch high with my 24 Fury and 1 inch to 1 1/4 inch high with a 25 tempest. The fury will bump the limiter even during the summer and in the winter I can get around 5500 rpm out of the Tempest. Best speed to date is 68.6 this winter with the 25 tempest and 67.8 with the Fury with full gas and all my gear ( I also have a 36 volt trolling motor on the front so I lost some speed with that extra weight in the front). With some adjustment and some seat time I am sure that you could turn a 24 three blade….regardless of model. With 20 psi you will be able to run the motor higher but will experience steering torque if you run it too high. Find what you are comfortable with on torque and water pressure (12 PSI WOT Min). I like to run atleast 14-16 PSI. Good luck and keep us up to date on your results.Elwood…..Bass Cat Proud
I have a 2010 sbare ftd with a 150 optimax and just swapped from a 25p tempest running around 63 at 5400 rpm and now have just put on a 23p power tech had to play what the jack plate and now Im turning 5600 rpm and running 64 water has been to rough to really run it but got a much better hole shot and I can tell Im going to be running faster
I have a SabreFTD 175 HPDI. Although, different motor I think the lower unit is very similar to Mercs. I have the following props and all have been tested extensively on my SabreFTD:24p Tempest Plus24p Fury25p Tempest Plus25p Fury Best all season prop is either 24p Tempest Plus or Fury for my 175 hp setup. All things consider two people in the boat and full live wells summer fishing including winter.Fury is the fastest between the two. Tempest Plus carries the load a little better with more bow lift. Slightly better mpg too. What I have found with two people in the boat is a 25p prop can have challenges achieving bow lift to max out WOT RPMS. Initially, I was at 3″ below pad. Thats fine for single rider in the boat but I had to lower my motor to 3.5″ below pad along with 24p Prop to get bow lift to maximize RPMs and trim out to full WOT potential. If you dont have a JP with a 150 HP setup Id consider a 23p Tempest Plus. Oops! I just read nreid09 post. There you have it.Last edited by Flyswatter on May 14th, 2013, 2:22 pm, edited 2 times in total.
