I’m running a new ’06 Sabre with Merc. XR-6. Still on double oil break-in. I had an issue after I bought the boat with the motor not being set up correctly. I blame myself for not going on a test run in 40 degree rain. Anyways the dealer I went to was a good 2 hours away. So I took it to a local premier Merc. shop. They told me the throttle cables were set up incorrectly and that the oil injection system was not bled. I am by no means a mechanic so this is my interpretation of what they said. So I called my dealer and told him this. They said that they definetly took care bleeding those lines. I believe both places as they are both reputable. So now I’m about ready to come off the double oil break-in period. I made a mark on the oil tank for the last two trips. I maybe ran an hour on these two combined and the oil level dropped not quite 3/16 of an inch. Does this sound correct?
Could there be a problem that I am unaware of? My biggest fear is going off double oil and blowing it up. The Merc. shop I took it to said that prior to having the set up corrected, that if I wasn’t running double oil; I would have blown the motor up.
For those buying new boats, don’t make the mistake I made. Be sure to take it for a test run. Taking your motor anywhere but the dealer you bought it from will cost you to have it set up, not covered by warranty. Lesson learned.
Thanks.

I have never checked mine like you did, but I keep an eye on it every trip before I leave. Mine does not burn much oil either. I previously had a Javelin w/ an Evinrude and it seemed like it used twice as much as my Sabre. Yours sounds like alright to me. Maybe someone else will chime in later to confirm.
If your not getting proper lubrication then I would have to believe your alarm would sound off. It sounds to me that you are ok but I am no mechanic. Old Timer or Sherm I’m sure can shead some light on your issue.

Jason,
We see no real problem and the dealer would have had to hook up diagnostic equipment to the engine in order to verify set up.
It is a very simple process of forward advancing the throttle, and there is no real other factory set up. Just check out.
The cables might have been off some, though that would have caused either hard shifting, or an idle issue, or no full throttle. We really can’t think it to be that complex. And we appreciate the local Merc dealership helping you out.
The oil consumption is probably fine as there is an alarm on the pump and the upper reservoir.
The lower tank is your main reservoir, the supply comes from the upper tank.
The level you mention sounds light on oil burn. You are going to burn a 50 to 1 mix on an XR-6 engine. So at mid range the ration is up some.
In a mid range condition and not full throttle, you should be able to burn about 200 gallons on a full reservoir of oil.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I’ll pay close attention for the next few trips. BCB your right there was an idle issue and that is what prompted me to take the boat in.
