I was doing my trailer inspection this past weekend getting ready to make a trip to the BASS high school nationals on Kentucky Lake for my son when I notice I have a seal leak on one of my hubs. I thought this wouldnt be a problem since I had already bought a spre set of bearings and seals from bass cat to keep with me just in case. After doing some research these Vault hubs are not the same as regular hubs, anybody ever took these apart and redone them?
You can temporarily run grease in them and repack them once the replacement is on hand, on the event you cant get it. We stock the grease in parts for Vault and you can get it from UFP also. The grease is thixotropic and it softens to a semi liquid molasses state when the wheel is turning, and it hardens to jelly like grease when sitting. You will need the small cartridge guns to fill the hub once assembled.
BassCat- Well just past 5 years on my hubs and blew a rear seal. Im trying to understand the repacking process desrcibed above as vault says the hubs are pressurized with 3-6 psi, hows this being done? Also you say will need the cartridge gun to refill once the hub is assembled? Where exactly is that suppose to be filled from once the hubs are assembled? So i will need a cartridge gun, the UFP grease, and new seals, where can i get those part numbers for ordering? One other question, if i got the new hub assmebly for $89.00 (non brake), is it correct to assume it comes with the torsion arm and is ready to install by removing the old assembly and installing the new assemlbly by removing the bolt, sliding it out, and sliding the new torsion arm in place? Or is it just the hub itself, then im back to square one with how is it then pressurized and filled?
The one you mention is for use as the emergency grease style only. You can get torsion arm idler style also. The grease is thixotropic and the cartridge gun injects it through the bearing cap. Air compresses once it loads from grease insertion.
I payed $200 from basscat and got an entirely new assembly. they can be serviced and bearing replaced but I didnt want to mess with all that. the hub and disc brake are all 1 assembly on mine so i just took the pinch bolt and brake caliper off and slid the new 1 on and done.the grease is not some fairy tale dust grease but standard marine waterproof kind. I called the manufacturer and asked. I have replaced 2 and still will replace the other side because the “NEW” hub assemblies that I got are “NOT” serviceable w/ a grease fitting. I plan to simply grease the other 2 every 2nd trip or so. call me if you want 501-514-0898
I am also trying to understand this. I downloaded the process for the filling process. It shows the grease fitting in the spindle end with very de tailed pictures. Looks like a simple process. My question is are the seals and bearing readly available through bcb or do you have to go through the manufacture. The only thing it doesnt show is do the grease remain in the spindle and is this the right download it shows only 2 styles look like difference being in the cover caps and I asume bearing sizesLast edited by Redngoo on November 14th, 2015, 10:37 pm, edited 1 time in total.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
the grease once warmed up slightly liquefies thus creating the “OIL” bath and then when cooled down becomes a bit more grease like. I have the number to the manufacturer I think around here somewhere as Bass Cat only has the hub assemblies and not the seal/bearing replacements as Alan informed me
Ok found the manual for filling, simple enough. UFP list a few different hub assemblies for the 5×4.5 lug pattern, which size hub is standard for our trailer standard 1 3/8″ x 1 1/16″ tapered 3500lb. axle spindles? Or 2000lb axle?
3500 pound axles
Thanks for all the answers especially on the weekend!
