Our most recent suggestion has been petroleum jelly because of its clear color. We also have used light oil that is clear. The issue is to avoid staining the carpeting.
Yep, Plain ol Vaseline ! Also put a glob on top of your battery posts, and in the summer heat it will melt and protect all the connections, also good under the running lights to lube those connections ! D.
