Looks like my 5 year old grand daughter is gonna be my fishing partner this spring. Am curious as how to accommodate her for seating on back deck. She likes to dock fish and been in boats often, just not on back deck fishing. Suggestions please. Keep her on front deck? LOZ gets rough, really prefer seat for her on back deck so I dont get hooked. Am new at this grandpa fishing thing?
My son fished off the back of my boat since he was about 4 or 5, with no problems at all. Ditto for my daughter. There IS a chance she will take a swim once or twice until she realizes that you do have to be a bit careful jumping around and such. As far as worrying about getting hooked, I would rather fish with them up front at 5 than with quite a few adults I know. I had a “city-boy” type cousin that I fished with a few times when we were young. Out of a 6 heavy-duty inflatable raft. He hooked that thing several times, half-sunk it once (it was a double chamber). All while using a 6 long rod. How you can sit inside a boat that is 6 long and maybe 4 wide and hook it with a rod that hangs 3 outside the boat I will never understand.I think the only problem she might have is feet not touching the floor if she sits in the folding seat. Whether you can find a shorter pole or not, I do not know.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
I had cut down a old seat pole to about 6 or 8 inches and put a new insert in it, so that my sons were able to sit in the folding seat comfortably.
Im getting close to grand kids being old enough to take out too. Im not making the same mistake with the grand kids I made with my son. Im not even going to try to fish, I will just help them cast, bait hook, etc. so they catch something/anything and dont get bored. I spent time fishing instead of helping my son fish when he was 9-10 with little fishing experience. He got bored and doesnt fish to this day except off shore on rare occasion. Not making same mistake 2nd time around. I will have one up front with mebut if have both out, Ill be in the middle and they can be up on decks with life jackets on of course. Really really looking forward to taking them out.
Thats the one thing Im really gna miss about the old 88 model I had. It had the 3rd seat pedestal down in the bottom right beside the console. Used to put my daughter in that seat and for the most part she was down low enough one didnt have to worry much. My daughter used to love it. Havent quite figured out the 2 grandkids yet. One Boy 4 one girl 10. They love fishing in the 2 ponds we have but the mention of going out in the boat and they just not having it. Hope it changes but for right Im definitely not pushing the issue. Luckily Im a machinist so if the time comes Ill just make a custom pedestal to fit the bill.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
We would try a more wrapped seat for her with arms, though we do not have that seat and they are hard to come by today. This is not a bad problem to have… Papa!
When my son and daughter were that age, I used a short (sit-down) pole and placed the butt seat on top of that. Much lower and allowed them to lean against it. My son was very prone to run around so often he fished with a 6-8 foot dog leash looped around the seat pole and clipped to his life jacket. As noted, this is the best problem you could possibly have!
Thats a good suggestion, a butt seat on spider mount with 13″ extension.
Seat in the back????? They need to be up there running the trolling motor!
An older car seat or booster type seat with full back some sides would be my choice to strap over main passanger seat. Cut down a pole for rear angler deck and install a similar car seat with back and raised sides would be fantastic. I remember how we used the circle bouncey seat for our one year old way way back when. With the life jacket on she couldnt move too much.Practice Angling CPRCatchPictureRelease2010 PIV 200SHO
