This is my second year fishing tournaments, first year fishing above the club level. My wife and I fish as a team and so far have never been in the money. Saturday we had a BBT Mother Lode regional tournament at Don Pedro reservoir in central California. This was our second tournament on the PII and second time EVER being on this lake. We had no real plan or idea where we were going to start, but it didnt matter much because we were about the 50th boat out and in the 5th flight. As we were heading up the river channel I spotted a small gravelly cove with deep (200+ feet) water close by. I swung in there and we began fishing it. I hooked a 1.5, then a 5, followed by another 1.5. Had a 12 pound bag by 7:30!! I hooked another 5 which culled a 1.5, so now we were sitting just above 15 pounds. I hooked four more over 4 but three broke off and one spit the hook. I figured out my breakage problem was do to some cheap beads on my T-rig setup….. We weighed in just over a 15 pound bag and got our entry fees paid back. Our placing was 11th out of 56 boats and it took 28 pounds to win it, that was with a 13 pound kicker. If I hadnt broken off on the two fish I SAW, we would have had around 22 pounds, for a second or third place finish. It was a good day but it could have been great. I have another tournament there this Saturday and if my pattern and spot holds out we will win this one. I love my basscat and it may prove to be my lucky boat!!
