Selling. A boat to Canadian buyer

Anyone have experience or advice? Purchaser can only inspect boat on weekends. Wire transfers through bank dont happen on weekends. He wants to use a bank draft. PayPal fees for wire transfer would be about 500 bucks.. Too much. Xoom only transfers from USA outgoing not from Canada incoming. I want a secure funds mechanism for my safety. Any ideas? Bob

There have been instances of either forged or misappropriated bank checks in the last few years that end up being no good. The bank apparently cannot tell if its good. They deposit it and if it doesnt clear oh well.Im just trying to protect my interests…not be a hard ass

Couldnt the potential buyer look at the boat on weekend number 1.Transfer funds during week.Pick up boat on weekend number 2.If serious, one week extra shouldnt change anything for the buyer.Dave.

Ive bought several boats in the States and never had an issue. I always pay with whatever method that the seller prefers, I feel that the seller is in control with respect to that. For me it would not be convenient to look at the boat on 2 separate weekends as I travelled 18 hours one way…that being said, I have taken a day or 2 off work to make the transaction during business hours…good luck with your sale.

Ive sold two boat into Canada. Both times used bank checks and there is a period of time that it takes for the funds to become available. 7-10 days if I recall. It would be no different here in the states. Wire transfer should not be $500……As said above, it sounds in your case its going to be 2 weekends to make this deal go down if he wants to inspect prior to buying. When I sold my last boat to a buyer out of state with a bank check I had him give me the check number and name of bank. Googled the bank phone number, called them and verified the check was legit.

I should mention I did that prior to him traveling to get the boat.he understood and was just fine letting me get my piece of mind.

Have him get in touch with your banker to verify funds. Your banker will need to call his bank to verify funds. Do it with a cashiers check. I sold a boat to a guy in Canada and it was seamless.

When I purchased my boat out of state we let our bankers talk to each other. Once the check was cut my leverage as far as the buyer was once looking at the boat if I like it and it was advertised as it was which indeed it was I signed the ck over. With so much mischief these days you never kno.
