Last weekend I got the fastest speed to date on my 08 Sabre w/ 150efi – 66 @5700gps. When I bought the boat it had a 24 Tempest +, jackplate 1/8th below flush and had seen 65 once with a lot of chine walk, torque steer, and marginal water pressure. Most times 63 was tops. Switched out to a 23 Tempest this last summer and came up on the plate to 1/4 above flush and hit 64gps. Its been great to drive – no chine, no torque steer, and only half the trim needed to run. A month ago – when the temps started dropping I hit the rev limiter and knew it wasnt going to work in the winter. Last weekend I bolted on a brand new 24 tempest to see how it would run. Didnt take time to drop the plate back down – just ramped in and ran the boat.Heres where things got interesting. Hole shot with the new prop was great – jumped out of the hole. Like the 23 – only took half the trim the lower plate setting required. No wheel torque or rooster tail and carried the boat well. Before I knew it – gps was reading 66 and tach was setting on 5700. I was by myself w/ all my gear and only had 1/4 tank of gas – so I know it was light. There was a real stiff cross wind gusting – so I didnt feel it was safe to completely air it out. Water pressure was setting on 15 – 16psi. With no torque, tail, and solid wp – I believe I can go up another 1/8″ or so on the plate. It just shocked me that the higher I went on the plate – the less trim I need to make it run. I dont have LU scoops or blocked water inlets. Checked on prop slip calculator – best to date 8%.
That sounds like youre close Jeff. Good driving, strong running,,,,what more could you ask for ! D.
Awesome! It sure is fun. Those even pitched props-tempest especially in the 24 & 26 are hit and miss on the pitch, sounds like you got a good one. You may have it tweaked this winter by mark croxton. you dont have to blue print, maybe just balance it. John S.
Of two different 24 Tempests – one was a turd and this ones a beast. Ive always worked with the assumption of “when your rooster tail is over the cowling and you have prop torque – go down on the plate”. In this case – I went up on the plate – used half the trim and gained speed & water pressure w/ little if any rooster tail and no torque. Using the same thought – should I go up until I loose grip, wp and get wheel torque? Just trim based on feel at each height? Its evident that I was just overtrimming at a lower plate height and that was causing the torque, tail, and low pressure. It was also costing me top end speed.
Nice. The mark croxton advice is solid. Let a reputable prop guy tweak it and then run it in clean cold water. Let us know what it does. Nothin like goin fast.
Best speed with my Sabre,09 with a 150EFI,Trophy 23,,light load by myself is 61 gps. Jackplate is a quarter above and water pressure is close to twenty wide open at 5600.Maybe I could get more with a three blade??
Absolutely – the Sabre hull has a ton of built in lift – and thats the whole reason youd want to look at a 4-blade. In 50 degree temps, Im turning my 23 tempest where its tickling the limiter at 64 light. 24 Tempests are a wild card out of the box – you dont know whether its good or bad till you run it. I now have two 24s – one never ran well – the other very very good. I may be able to get more from this one – but I want to see how it does under a full load and know that it will still carry the boat when its loaded. My old 24 would not hold lift at elevated heights and tourney loaded. Since I have no tail, I believe the cupping is holding better. Water time fully loaded is the answer now.
Keep the good one as is and send the other off while you play with your set up. Thats what Id do but that doesnt always mean a lot.
Okay I am about to purchase a sabre with a 150 efi on it…What is the ideal prop for top end, a 3 blade or 4 blade..I always though the 24 inch 3 blade tempest would be best for top end, but it sounds like from this post that the 4 blade might be the best bet?????
Depends on the season. Top speed in the fall/winter – Tempest 24. Hot weather – Tempest 23. Dont know if there are other 3 blades that would do better – but that hull doesnt need a 4 blade. What I was opining on with Onebgfish is that the only reason to look to a 4 blade is stern lift. The Sabre hull has a ton of built in lift and doesnt need any help really. It also doesnt like a ton of trim. Ive heard that a lot of folks like the TXP prop and wonder how it would work on the Sabre.Last edited by jstew on December 12th, 2010, 1:42 pm, edited 1 time in total.
