Shifter handle difficult to engage release sticks

All, I am sure someone has had to lube or repair a shifter. This seems pretty simple, but figured I ask before tearing it apart. 2003 Cougar with 2006 Evinrude Etec 225 HO. When I squeeze or compress the shifter release, to move it either forward or reverse, it sticks. Like the release is not quite moving the release lock far enough. Once past the release, it glides forward or reverse smooth and easy, so its definitely at the shifter handle assembly. Im a DIYer and 5 hrs from the closest dealer so for something this simple, would rather not spend the $Hundreds in fuel to tow it over there. All that thing does is lift a piece of plastic out of the way. I think? The piece of plastic in the shifter is directly connected to lift piece. Is there not a motor repair shop w/i 5 hours for your motor?If not Id just unscrew the plate over there and have at it. Pretty simple at level of the actual shifter. Its a bit harder to get the control out if this is a Cougar FTD.

@BCB I tore into to it tonight and, yes its an enigma. Theres a screw on the plate behind the handle and two screws on the gunwal side of the handle one of which is not accessible, and then the there is one under the handle push button thingy in the cente

That is an OMC control box from years ago. They removed out the front and they were a bit tedious.

I realized I failed to post a follow up on this. Thank you grybrd, the link got me headed in the right direction. Turns out that when Bombardier bought Evinrude they also bought up OMC. I found the information on the Evinrude website after some serious hunting. http://www.evinrudeonlineparts.com/OemP … 21%2f609910174921 is the part required. Its called a Driveshaft and plate. What happens is the hole that is plate where Neutral is located gets worn and the ball bearing that is spring loaded pushes two far into the slot and you cant shift the shifter. If I had a TIG welder and the skill, it would have been fairly quick to add some material back on to that slot and file it smooth and save the money of buying a new part. My local Evinrude dealer pointed me to US Boat works in Kansas City. They had 6 in stock. It cost me more to express it than the part cost. But I had run out of time. It was not an easy job and when I put it back together I have to admit I got temporarily fooled by the inital stiffness when putting it in Reverse which went away almost immediately. Lots of lithium grease used in reassembly and lots of cleaning when I took it a part but Ill have it for another dozen years.
