Dropped lower unit changed impeller put all back now shifter sticks I turn prop works perfectly Mechanic checked it says its all good I feel like theres a issue it never stuck before I dropped lower unit What are we missing here Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It is possible that the shift shaft moved either in the lower unit or on the mid-section. It is a splined shaft. I would try the following:(1) drop L/U again.(2) take a pair of vice-grips plus a protective piece of rubber or leather over the shift shaft in the L/U and turn it in both directions. Get it up on the “hump” for neutral, which you can recognize by the prop turning in both directions.(3) Remove cowl and look at the shift cable side of the motor. There is a small mark on the block the cable fits into, and that should center up on the neutral switch. If it is not centered, push it by hand, it has some play due to the way the cable is made. You can find a picture by searching for “shift cable adjustment for mercury outboards”.(4) now put things back together making you dont turn the shift linkage unless you have to slightly move it to get the shaft to mesh with the lower unit. That will likely solve it.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Its strange it shifts perferct when motor is runningOnly when its off If I spin prop it goes into forward fine bit you have spin prop again to go to forward never had one do this before Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Have spin prop to go back reverse gearSent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
And sometimes when key turns off it goes either way no problem it may be fine I may just be doubting myself!seems like maybe the way shift dogs are stopping after shutdown I guess Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
This is just my opinion. You need the back pressure while it running. This is why ur getting the smooth shift while its running. Its not uncommom for it not to shift well without it running in the water. In fact i dont reccomend shifting it while not in the water running. Anytime i do a water pump i alwsys have a second hand to “wiggle” the prop a little to help it shift. Shifting alot out of water not running spells trouble. I bet its ok .2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
This is not uncommon as the moving shafts allow everything to lineup properly. They simply shift better running and they are fine to run it of the water on a hose briefly. Mechanics run them up all the time as does Mercury.
I think it is okim going go to let it ride and hit water later this week On sweet note I just got the boat its 2010 model with 150 opti mechanic hooked it up on pc registered 35 hours Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
DANGER! Will Robinson…. [cue theme music for the old Lost In Space TV series here…] Do NOT shift while motor is NOT running. Merc changed the way the shift mechanism and clutch dogs work. You can bend the shift shaft easily, even the one in the L/U by doing this, and that is not a $10 repair.Your owners manual is your friend. Read it cover to cover. It clearly says to NOT shift unless the motor is running, or damage can occur. Here is one such warning:NOTICEShifting into gear at engine speeds above idle will damage the gearcase. Shifting into gear when the engine is not running can cause misalign the clutch, preventing proper shifting. Always shift the gearcase into gear when the engine is operating at idle. If you must shift while the engine is not operating, rotate the propeller shaft in the appropriate direction during shifting.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
